For most cars it's about 60,000 miles, but for better quality, German engineered cars, it is very possible that it doesn't have to be replaced at 60,000 miles. But it is better to get it done sooner than later. Here's why, it costs $400-$600 to get it done BEFORE the belt breaks, and $2,000-$3,000+ to get it done AFTER it beaks. The reason is that the valves can be damaged inside the pistons and much more work would need to be done on the car. And if the belt would be replaced before it broke it wouldn't cost as much.
