Chrysler voyager with the 3.3 engine timing question?

My wife's voyager has 95000 miles on it. I was thinking about changing the timing chain, but was told to leave it alone until I start having problems with it, because they usually don't wear out.

Your engine does use a chain, as opposed to a belt, and they do tend to last a lot longer. They're not considered a normal maintenance item. That being said, most modern chains are nylon-coated, and do not last as long as the old all steel ones. But still, 95,000 would be pretty early to expect any trouble from one. And if the nylon does start to chunk off, you will notice some drive-ability problems, but not catastrophic failure like with a belt on an interference engine. So I'd say don't worry about it unless you have symptoms. If you do, you can check for timing chain slack by using the procedure outlined here;

Oops, almost forgot that the 3.3 doesn't have a distributor anymore. You can still do the test by taking off a valve cover, and watching a rocker arm instead.

If it turns out you do need to do it, here's some help from the Autozone Repair Guide;

That motor timing chain always go. They start getting loose or weak. And to make matters worse the oil pump always go to at the same time the chain goes. You should really replace it. Also decide either to replace the oil pump while you are at it. Trust me- I had it with Chrysler motors. My aunt had a Voyager and her timing belt/chain broke a little pass 100,000 miles. Then the oil pump went too. She was lucky that she did not had any sever engine damage when the belt/chain broke. Or when the oil pump lost pressure. You are looking around $300 in parts plus labor. A good investment if you plan to keep that vehicle for another 90 thousand miles.
If you look in your manual , I believe they recommend changing it at 100 Gs I am mixed up with Km. 100,000 km is 60,000 miles .regardless it needs to be done. Make sure you know what your doing cause its allot of work and you only want to do it once. If you don't own a shop manual buy one from a local Auto parts store
I have seen those vans in the salvage sales with 50,000 miles on them. Check your owners manual and follow the schedule in there.
That is correct. I've seen those vans with well over 500,000kms on the engine and that not being a problem. Don't worry about it at all.
you were told right ! they will last a long time as long as you keep the oil changed.
