Go with Paul on this my friend. A chain should last much, much longer than a belt and yours certainly shouldn't have failed at that mileage. There was an issue a while ago, as he points out.

Normally you would change the timing drive at 60.000 or three years or whatever comes first .
First of all it depends on the quality of the belt but normally it must be replaced after 50000-60000 miles
chains generally don't break it is probably the cam belt which is made of rubber, usually they should be replaced at 60000 miles or 40000 for a diesel, often breaking wrecks the engine too
Most vehicle manufacturers recommend you replace the timing chain/belt at 50,000 miles. Sounds to me yours lasted its planned life cycle.
A timing chain should last 100k+ as opposed to a timing belt which the other posters are referring to which should be changed around the 60k mark as a general rule.
Check with your local main dealer if this work isn't covered by the Agila timing chain recall which happened a couple of years ago, you might get it done free.
As an aside, I have a 1987 Land Rover with 100k on the engine with its original factory fitte timing belt, fool hardy but I want it to break to give me an excuse to drop in a nice 300tdi.:o)
