Does a 52 plate Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2ltr petrol have a timing Chain or Timing Belt?

If it's a belt, does anyone roughly know how much to have one replaced at a small local garage would cost, and the recommended mileage to have it changed? Many thanks
Does a 52 plate Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2ltr petrol have a timing Chain or Timing Belt?
its the m4 mazda engine in the petrol mondeo, its chain drive , and give no problems.
Does a 52 plate Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2ltr petrol have a timing Chain or Timing Belt?
Belt. Probably about 拢120 or so. Normally changed around the 80k / 5 year mark - some cars differ. There will be extra cost if there are belt pre-tensioners to be changed as well.
Belt and probably around 拢200 for the full kit and not just the belt at a local independent
a belt probably but the only way to know for sure is take it apart and find out

  • How to remove oil pan form 1965 chevy impala?

i'm changing timing chain cover and oil pan , putting every thing new.but can't take off oil pan. i took off my steering linkage. and starter.
How to remove oil pan form 1965 chevy impala?
You need to loosen the trans mount and engine mounts, then jack the engine/trans up slightly. Use a jack with either the cradle or a 2x4 blocking. You'll then get clearance to pull the oil pan from under the member. It'll slide forward - with a little monkeying to get past the bottom-end bits.

You will have to raise the engine also.

Ford KA 1.3 2000.. cambelt or timing chain?

    I'm getting a Ford KA 1.3 year 2000 (W Reg) petrol

Does this car have a cambelt or a timing chain how often does this need changing?

How much does it cost to service ?

also is it normal for Ka's to be quite a loud drive?

    thanks
Ford KA 1.3 2000.. cambelt or timing chain?
Ford Ka's have timing chains, not cam-belts and you shouldn't really change the timing chain unless you're advised to, you can cause problems by changing them there's nothing wrong with them.

I've had two Ka's both bought in very good condition and I've looked after them, and both have been very noisy. Ford's are much noisier than most other makes, but I love my Ka to bits. Services aren't usually very expensive at all.

They're not too noisy in residential areas when below 55-60mph but at high speeds a plane engine would probably be quieter! Have a listen from outside the car, if there are any strange noises like rattling metal you should get it checked out. But with general engine noise, Ka's are loud.
Ford KA 1.3 2000.. cambelt or timing chain?
The Ford KA is chain driven, no change interval. One of the very few.

Cost about 拢130.00 for a full service.

Loud as in what? Engine, road?

Is you exhaust okay? If it鈥檚 tapping/banging from the engine take it in.
timing chain but does require adjustment to stop it rattling special tools needed to adjust it
I am not sure whether ka are cambelt or have a timing chain although they should not be loud to drive, i have driven ka's and they are not loud from my experience. It is possible that the timing chain may need replacing if it uses one, this costs 拢100 for the chain new (that's for a corsa though) and 拢100 labour that was the cheapest that i found. They need replacing ever 60000-70000 miles as far as i am aware.
The Ka uses an ancient pushrod OHV engine, which uses a short timing chain to the camshaft which is mounted in the block, not the cylinder head as in OHC engines.

As for your additional info - YES! They're a very 'clattery' engine, they sound like an absolute bag of nails, but this can be significantly improved by correctly adjusting the valve clearances (cheap %26amp; simple job).
it has a timing chain which sounds like it needs adjusting but it could be something else as these engines are usually very quiet.

When should i replace a timing chain?

I have a 2001 cavalier, it has 117k mi on it %26amp; i havent replaced it yet. when should i change it %26amp; is there any warning i get b4 i goes 4 good?
When should i replace a timing chain?
You should replace the chain/gears when there is more than a few degrees of play in the assembly.

To check it: rotate the motor (by hand) till you reach TDC. Remove the distributor cap. While watching the distributor shaft (rotor), turn the motor backwards until the distributor shaft begins to turn. Then note the amount that you were able to rotate the crankshaft... I cannot remember the specified amount that is acceptable at the moment (the reason I said a few degrees). There is an actual spec for this.

With that said, I have put over 200k miles on multiple vehicles without replacement of the timing chain.
When should i replace a timing chain?
do it now...even on a non interference engine letting go at high speed can damage engine [and leave you stranded usually on a rainy night far from home!!]
Nope no warning and if it quits it will likely cause lots more damage, go ahead and change it I think the general recommendation is 50 70 k miles
Don't listen to any of them.

Yea, it is smart to change it and its usually after 100K miles. But if you are going to change that, you need to go ahead and do an overhaul on the whole engine. Because in the long run, the cost to have the timing chain replaced is going to be with-in reason%26quot;depending on how long you are keeping the car%26quot; of cost... that you should just overhaul the whole engine. Unless you're going to do it yourself.

But why dismantle half your engine to replace one part when, while your into it, you can replace multiple parts.
The timing chain/gears will go forever, or they could fail. No warning. However, wear on the timing chain/gears can create rough-running engine or rattling noise. I've had timing gears fail at 200K miles (not a Chevy Cavalier), and the engine timing went off because the chain jumped a tooth on the gears. If you can afford it, it's good to replace them as a part of a full maintenance/rebuild after 100K.
I would wait for the chain and gears to start rattling at idle. When it starts doing that , plan on getting a new chain-gear set and tensioner for it.

For Timing Chain and Gears, there are no prescribed replacement intervals; these components should be replaced as needed.

    %26lt;/quote%26gt;

I would ask why they feel that the timing chain needs replacement - is there something wrong with it? Otherwise, there is no set replacement interval.

Even looking at the scheduled maintenance guide for your car at http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com/ , I do not see a timing chain replacement listed at the 100,000 mile/60 month service.

(If your 2002 Camry had the V6 engine, that does have a timing belt rather than a chain, and it should be replaced at the 90,000 mile/72 month service.)

No need to change timing chain.
%26quot;Stealer ship%26quot; is wrong, this model does not have timing chain.
They are trying to take your money. You replace them when they are causing a problem/broken. That being said I have never seen a Toyota with a timing chain problem that was taken car of. Such as- changing your oil!

Do a search to find it, or, better yet, spend the $10 and by the Haynes manual. The money you're saving doing the belt yourself is worth the investment!
i would not recommend a step by step instruction for something like a timing belt job.

also, i hope you will change the water pump, all external drive belts, cam shaft seal, crank shaft seal, re-fill new coolant, and a new valve cover gasket.

That is a timing belt JOB. not just replacing the belt. That does you no good when the cam shaft seal goes bad and starts leaking on the exhaust and giving you alot of smoke or if the water pump goes bad, then you have to take ALL THAT TIME TO GO BACK AND DO IT AGAIN, when you could have done it all at once because everything is right next to each other. that is several hundred dollars at the mechanic all over again.

2002 Ford F150 Noise lifter/follower No damage found! Timing Chain?

I have a 2002 Ford F150 supercab 4.6L V8 FI SOHC 16V that started making noise about a month ago it sounded really loud from the passengers side valve cover so I shut it off right away to avoid any major engine damage and the took off the valve cove to inspect it but I didn't find anything wrong with the followers/lifters but the timing chain seemed to have alot of slack could this be whats making so much noise and how much of a pian is it to change the chain? Will it eventually cause more damage or will it just be loud. Thanks
2002 Ford F150 Noise lifter/follower No damage found! Timing Chain?
Well first off you may want to take it to a qualified individual. There are no lifters or followers in this engine. Its an overhead cam design. The timing chain has an automatic tensioner so if there is an exsessive amount of play in the chains that would be the place to start. IS THE CAM FLAKING OR SCORED?

    Timing belt/chain-what's the difference?

what is the difference between a timing belt and a timing chain? do timing chains have to be changed?
    Timing belt/chain-what's the difference?
Timing belts are made of rubber...timing chains are metal. The belts need to be changed every 60000 miles (depending on the car ..I usually changed it around 100,000 ). Chains do not get changed.
    Timing belt/chain-what's the difference?
no, timing belts are the ones to change.

Check this site out. it has prices too.
the difference is just that belt and chain the belts have to be changed about every 100,000 miles and chains generally don't need changed unless they break
Timing-belt is at least partly fiber and or rubber whereas a timing chain is metal. If either breaks the engine fibrillates,
a timing belt is on the outside of the moter, chains are inside,

Belts wear out faster than chains. Timing chains don't get changed unless you are taking the moter apart,

If you change a timing chain you need to change the gears at the same time. Belts you just have to change the belt.
yes they do,,and the difference,, is one is made of rubber,,and is on the outside of the motor,,and easier to change,,the other which is the timing chain,,is in side the motor,, and is made of steel,, and is hard to change,,and either one will cost you more money to change if you run it till it breaks,,i hope this help,s.
Timing belts are mostly used on today's modern engines. Timing belts connect the the crankshaft to the cam shaft. A timing belt tension pulley is used to provide a tight fit. This work very well in racing and everyday driving. Timing chains perform the same function as timing belts, but are becoming more obsolete.
mrfinger86's answer is not fully correct: the belt is technically outside of the engine, but both timing belts and chains are found underneath the valve covers of an engine--NOT VISIBLE unless the valve cover is removed.

Timing chains are just that--chains. They don't typically need to be replaced, but sometimes they do stretch/ warp, and that will cause an engine to run poorly and possibly critically unsafe. They are more expensive to replace in both parts and labor--it is more difficult to change a chain than a belt, and the part itself is also more expensive.

Belts WILL break over time. Usually not before 120000 miles, but it depends on the belt and use. Most service manuals for modern cars recommend changing them anywhere from 60K to 100K miles. DON'T LET IT BREAK! An ounce of prevention is a pound of cure, seriously.

Some engines can be VERY seriously damaged if the timing belt breaks. So replace it according to the service interval foudn int he owner's manual, and you should be OK.

Replacing a timing belt/chain is not a DIY job, unless you have substantial experience with engines already, and the proper tools...
On some cars the timing belts have to be changed every 30.000 miles and the mileage goes up from there.

Chains do have to be changed if the chain is worn out, or the slack adjuster, won't take the slack out of the chain. Usually find slack chains on engines that are high mileage engines.

I agree with Eric. It is NEVER good for a timing belt to break. On some engines that have close or zero tolerance this can be catastrophic.

It is far better safe(and cheaper) than sorry.
Does My car have a timing belt of a timing chain?
manufacturers push the limits of a timing belt to help you believe the car doesn't need a lot of maintenance. honda is notorious for this, and they push to 105,000. You're better off changing it at 75-80,000 miles and never worry about it breaking.

HOw often should the timing belt/chain be changed on a 1998 Lincoln 4.6 motor?

You should have a 16 valve Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) cast iron block engine with timing chains (not belts) driven from the crank shaft up to the 4 cylinder head overhead cam on each side of the engine. If you've done your oil changes regularly, especially using synthetic oil, the timing chain should easily last 200,000 miles with no maintenance required, and probably longer.

2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited Edition V6 2WD ~ Timing Belt or Timing Chain?

  • Timing Belt on Toyota Corolla. I hear that after the year 1999 it is a chain. Do you still need to change?

And, how much is it to change the chain?
Timing Belt on Toyota Corolla. I hear that after the year 1999 it is a chain. Do you still need to change?
I've never heard of a 4-cylinder with a timing %26quot;chain%26quot;.. But I suppose with imports, anything is possible.. The usual configuration is, 4 cylinders have belts.. 6, 8, 10's and 12's have a %26quot;chain%26quot;..

Now, with imports such as Toyota's and Nissan's and the like, they're front wheel drive.. This means that the engines are placed in the vehicle sideways (this means that what is technically the %26quot;front%26quot; of the engine, actually sits towards the passenger side of the vehicle)..This includes American cars too..

Unfortunately, front wheel drive vehicles have one major flaw.. Working on them.. For any reason!!! With the engine placed in sideways, to remove and change either a timing belt OR chain, requires some rather advanced skill and techniques over what would be an easy chore with a rear wheel drive vehicle.. Not to mention it's more expensive, but of course, that goes to reason.. LOL.. It's these reasons also, that auto makers are going back to rear wheel drive.. The advantages of rear wheel drive outweigh the single advantage front wheel drive offers.. And mechanics hate working on them (which is really why they cost so damned much for the customer/victim to have them worked on)..

If your Toyota is a 4-cylinder and has a timing belt, it should be changed every 40k miles.. If it's a 4 cylinder and in fact DOES have a chain, then the chain should be like those chains on larger engines and last the life of the engine (unless they too are plastic, like the older Pontiac engines).. In which case, you should at least have it looked at when you get to 40k, like a belt..

Again, if you need a chain replaced, heh, it's not gonna be cheap.. Count on at least $300.00 (rounded off) for labor costs and another $50.00 - $75.00 for the chain (belts are around $40.00).. And about 2-3 days to do the work (they usually just lift the engine out of the car to do the job.. It's easier)..

That's the trade off when you buy foreign over American.. Toyota makes a good quality car.. They run great.. UNTIL they need work.. To change the chain or belt on a rear wheel drive car would take only a day and cost about $200.00, all said and done.. Something to consider when you buy another car..

I hope this helped you out.. Take care..

The %26quot;best answer%26quot; selected here has some serious issues: #1 is that the answer is from an %26quot;Auto Mechanic%26quot; who knows very little about Toyotas (the most popular car in the US). #2 is that most US car brand cars are also front-wheel-drive even today. If it has a chain, NO.
Timming Belt ( chain ) doesn't neccessary to change but toyota prefer to change at 300,000 km. there is a noice from the chain when the engine used for many kilometer...
timing belt in any car usually incurred wear and tear, the best indicator is to consult your manual. the command in changing a timing belt is the distance you traveled.

normally. 50,000 km on your odometer, whether it is made within a year or more, need to change your timing belt, especially those front wheel drive. cost of belt varies, get the good one.

when should i replace the timing chain, do you reckon it would have been replaced before ? , any way to tell?

and eventually a tappet has to be replaced, probably replace them all....

is that hard to do ?
Timing Chain, when should i change it ?
Do it when you have to replace the tappet as the rocker cover needs to come off. they dont often get replaced unless they are getting noisy or the front cover is leaking oil. They can be a big job, ie sump dropped. tappets can be easy to replace depending on the model of engine.
Timing Chain, when should i change it ?
you may as while replace it since the manifold is already off, replace the gears also. it should come in a kit.

Chrysler voyager with the 3.3 engine timing question?

My wife's voyager has 95000 miles on it. I was thinking about changing the timing chain, but was told to leave it alone until I start having problems with it, because they usually don't wear out.
Chrysler voyager with the 3.3 engine timing question?
    Your engine does use a chain, as opposed to a belt, and they do tend to last a lot longer. They're not considered a normal maintenance item. That being said, most modern chains are nylon-coated, and do not last as long as the old all steel ones. But still, 95,000 would be pretty early to expect any trouble from one. And if the nylon does start to chunk off, you will notice some drive-ability problems, but not catastrophic failure like with a belt on an interference engine. So I'd say don't worry about it unless you have symptoms. If you do, you can check for timing chain slack by using the procedure outlined here;

    http://www.misterfixit.com/chanslop.htm

Oops, almost forgot that the 3.3 doesn't have a distributor anymore. You can still do the test by taking off a valve cover, and watching a rocker arm instead.

    If it turns out you do need to do it, here's some help from the Autozone Repair Guide;

Chrysler voyager with the 3.3 engine timing question?
That motor timing chain always go. They start getting loose or weak. And to make matters worse the oil pump always go to at the same time the chain goes. You should really replace it. Also decide either to replace the oil pump while you are at it. Trust me- I had it with Chrysler motors. My aunt had a Voyager and her timing belt/chain broke a little pass 100,000 miles. Then the oil pump went too. She was lucky that she did not had any sever engine damage when the belt/chain broke. Or when the oil pump lost pressure. You are looking around $300 in parts plus labor. A good investment if you plan to keep that vehicle for another 90 thousand miles.
If you look in your manual , I believe they recommend changing it at 100 Gs I am mixed up with Km. 100,000 km is 60,000 miles .regardless it needs to be done. Make sure you know what your doing cause its allot of work and you only want to do it once. If you don't own a shop manual buy one from a local Auto parts store
I have seen those vans in the salvage sales with 50,000 miles on them. Check your owners manual and follow the schedule in there.
That is correct. I've seen those vans with well over 500,000kms on the engine and that not being a problem. Don't worry about it at all.
you were told right ! they will last a long time as long as you keep the oil changed.

1998 BMW 328 is timing belt or chain?
As stated above, it is a chain. They will normally last the life of the car. That should be 250-300K miles.

One thing you want to be aware of is the cooling system on these cars. If you get to 75K and the water pump hasn't been replaced yet, you are very lucky and should go ahead and replace it. The originals had plastic impellers and they break anywhere from 50-90K miles.

1998 BMW 328 is timing belt or chain?
    its a timing chain

the last 3 series to use belts were E30s

if the car only has 54k on it

    not much

just reg oil changes and fluids

hell the car isnt even broken in

    my 1st car was a 98 328is when i got it

it had 60k on it now it has 180k and its been a great car

the only thing i have had to replace is the clutch and rear diff and it was my fault i was playing in the snow

Does a 1993 Nissan 300ZX non-turbo have a timing belt or timing chain?

if it is timing belt, then when should it be changed and what else should I change along with it.

how much does it cost for this car, roughly?
Does a 1993 Nissan 300ZX non-turbo have a timing belt or timing chain?
    It has a belt!

It is recommended to change every 105,000 miles or every 84

    months, regardless of the

condition because they will become brittle.

Cost can vary widely depending on where you live, dealer service or independant shop. The cost of the belt should be about $30-$50.

Does the 2006 Saab 9-3 linear have a timing belt or timing chain? What parts need to be changed at 80k miles?

belt not a chain, if you're gonna do the timing belt do the water pump too as there is alot of labor involved and the only way to reach a water pump is taking off the timing belt so would be a good idea.

If your car is running fine I wouldn't bother, just change your oil every 3,000 miles, oil filter, ail filter, wheels rotated and balanced every 6,000 miles stuff like that

I have an 83 buick lasabre, no spark or fuel delivery. think timing chain is bad. can you confirm.?

the rotor under my dist. cap wont turn either. are timing chains hard to change out?
I have an 83 buick lasabre, no spark or fuel delivery. think timing chain is bad. can you confirm.?
I own a shop, and if the rotor doesn't turn, then something is broken, either the timing chain/belt, or the distributor gear has sheared the teeth off of it. To confirm; Remove the valve cover, turn engine by hand, and if the valves aren't working then it's shot for sure. You will have to remove the spark plugs in order for it to turn easy enough.

    Part two:

Depending on the engine, some timing chains/belts can be pretty dificult to change. Some special tools are required. The pulley on the crankshaft must be removed to change it, and you must have a puller to remove it because it is a press fit. If you have one that is stuck, then you can break it very easy without the proper pulling device to use on it. You can go to the library, and look at a %26quot;Chiltons Repair Manual%26quot; that covers your engine. This will walk you through the operation step by step, has pictures, and explains how its done the right way. On a scale of 1-10 the difficulty of this job is about an 8, so you can decide if its one you should tackle or not. One way to look at it is; if you make a mistake, the common things that will happen are; the engine won't run, could fire at the wrong time bending a rod, blowing a head gasket, breaking a piston, or bending one or many valves. Yes this sounds like major damage to me. Even done right, its very difficult to do this job without causing an oil leak, because on most chain type engines, you must drop the oil pan down to get the timing cover back in place without messing the front crank seal up. This is a job better left to a professional. In the long run you will be much better off.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
I have an 83 buick lasabre, no spark or fuel delivery. think timing chain is bad. can you confirm.?
If the rotor wont turn then the timing chain is bad. the timing chain is pretty easy to replace. The hardest part about this repair is removing all of the accessory brackets to get to the front cover.

It has a timing belt and you should replace it at 100,000 miles along with the water pump and camshaft oil seals. You might want to replace the thermostat and crankshaft seal as well. Here are part numbers and prices.

    Cam seals: 1304216V00 $10.03 x2

    Timing belt: 1302845P86 $49.27

    Water pump: 2101022P27 $114.88

    Thermostat: 2120042L01 $21.12

    Crankshaft oil seal: 1304216V00 $10.03
Does a 1993 Nissan 300ZX non-turbo have a timing belt or timing chain?
Nissan recommends are the 60k maint package, which includes the timing belt, thermostat, water pump, cam seals, inlet and outlet water hoses (with clamps). This is the most expensive maint package. The good thing is that it will not require extra time to replace everything listed because you have to remove all that stuff to get to timing belt. The cheapest route would be to buy the parts yourself from the local auto parts store and let Nissan do the work. All the parts will run about 180.00 and Nissan will only charge the 5 or 6 hours of work about 600.00. If you get the parts from NIssan add another 400. Also good luck on maint manual because you will not find one. Z's only have a tech manual which you will either have to order from Nissan (over a 100,00) or try and get one off ebay. On ebay they run btwn 50 -80. Do not get the cd manual. they don't have all the tips on testing parts like the tech manual does.
Go to Pep Boys and get a Chilton work manual for the car before attempting an timing belt/waterpump change. The owners manual isn't going to go into nearly enough detail to do this job. If memory serves the Nissan 300ZX has a belt not a chain. If it has belt tensioners you'll want to change those, also have to check the condition of the belt sprockets...if they are worn, those will need to be replaced.
Buy a shop manual at an auto parts store and if it has alot of miles and has not been done before I would definetly have it done. If you don't know if it's been done.... have your local mechanic take a look.

Any Honda mechanics can tell me wnat year they stopped req. timing chain to be changed?

In 2004 the Accord had a timing chain instead of a belt.

In 2006 the Civic went to chains instead of belts.

The CR-V has had timing chains since 2002.

All vehicles with a V6 engine still have belts.

Older vehicles with belts called for changing the belt every 90,000, 105,000 or 120,000 miles unless the vehicle's use was classified as severe in which case it would be sooner than that. Even a chain could eventually cause problems especially when you have it in a car that runs forever. A chain would cost a lot more to replace but because it last so much longer there is no time recommended top change it. It's important to keep the oil topped off.

You can look up maintenance schedules in the owner's manuals available online here: https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/RJAA鈥?/a>
Any Honda mechanics can tell me wnat year they stopped req. timing chain to be changed?
The Maintenance Minder will tell you when to change the timing belt on a 2006 or 2007 vehicle. The time will vary according to how you drive the vehicle. Things that can affect this difference is how much city verses rural driving you do %26amp; how much time you sit with the vehicle idling.

Any Honda mechanics can tell me wnat year they stopped req. timing chain to be changed?
It would be a code number 4 on the Maintenance Minder indicator. The time to change the belt can vary from 60,000 to 120,000 miles depending how you drive. See pages 194 %26amp; 199 in the owner's manual.

timing belt 80k mils on most cars
    ?

    Honda engines are interference engines.

They all should have a service interval to the timing BELT.

Or just ignore that and replace a whole engine when the valves smash into pistons...
Hahahahaha...funny how the guy above is all cocky...

Ever heard of a the K-series engines? Which have timing CHAINS??
they have never stopped suggesting that they shouldnt be changed. Usually a car should have water pump and timing belt replace around 70k mi. Many honda techs i know say in hondas you should do it around 100k miles!!

How often should i change the timing belt/chain on my 2005 nissan terrano 2.7tdi?

I don't follow the rule book when it comes to changing belts.

Ive replaced many in my time that have broken well before the stipulated time in the handbook.. On my own car and others I recommend every 20K miles. The belt is relatively cheap compared to a rebuilt engine, so I always play on the safe side.

    As for changing timing chains.

Timing chains last a very long time but when worn tend to rattle. Unless this is picked up by a mechanic as severe, do not worry yourself over this.
How often should i change the timing belt/chain on my 2005 nissan terrano 2.7tdi?
if its a belt best at 80k miles if its a chain then never chains do not wear like a belt.
How often should i change the timing belt/chain on my 2005 nissan terrano 2.7tdi?
The 2.7 tdi that would be the belt and that would be change at every 75000 miles if it was chain which doubt it will be, it would need the chain tensioner/s changing every 85-95000 miles but this would be proceeded by a terrible knocking and a chin rattle

2004 Toyota Corolla LE with 1.8 hp (4 cyl): timing chain, or timing belt?

Does it have a timing BELT, or a timing CHAIN? How often does it have to be changed?

I bought the car with 10,000 miles on it. It now has 62,000 or so, and I was wondering about the timing chain/belt.

Next month I will have had this car for 4 years. Has not been in the shop even once. I do all minor maintenance (change oil faithfully every 3,500 miles, change air filter every 10,000, change transmission fluid %26amp; filter every 25,000, and change plugs every 25,000, rotate tires every 10,000 miles).

I know that this may sound excessive for the transmission filter/fluid, and spark plugs, but this is what I do to keep repair bills down. My wife drives this car; gets an average of 33 mph around town, and about (but not quite!) 43 mph on highway.

I'm still amazed that I have not had to take this car to the dealer or mechanic for ANYTHING since I bought it in July 2004.

Would appreciate any info about timing change/belt (how many miles before change} Thank you

    Yours has a BELT...

You may call the dealer for the exact mileage... however, I believe those are recommended to be changed around 85-100k miles. Though I will say, our shop does not usually see issues with them until 150-200K miles.

TIming Chain. Change on engine rebuild.
It has a timing belt. I believe toyota recommends replacing it every 60,000 miles. So...yours is due.

But you're wasting oil by changing it every 3500 miles. The oil these days can go 5000 to 7500 miles before needing changing. Your dad probably told you to change it every 3500 miles but oil products have come a long way technologically since he was taught that buy your grandfather.

I worked on Toyots for 9 years. you're doing a fantastic job!! I wish others were like you. Toyotas are pretty indestructable. Oil changes are the most critical...but again, 3500 miles is a little too excessive.

If the timing chain on a 02 cavilier is broken, can it still get spark?

Tested the coil packs and crank sensor. They are good.Got current goint to ignition modules but none going to the coil pack. There are two ignition modules but is seeming that both are bad. Would both go at the same time? Had to change the ignition switch because something with the anti theft was messed up. there is no chip in the key. Any ideas why I dont have spark? Car ran fine earlier except that I had to keep undoing the battery to get it to start due to the ignition switch being messed up.
If the timing chain on a 02 cavilier is broken, can it still get spark?
sounds like you still have an issue with the factory anti-theft system. Did you have the pass-lock system re-learned after the switch was replaced?? if the ignition switch or pass-lock sensor were changed and the system not relearned it will not allow the vehicle to start. is the theft indicator on steady or flashing after you try to start the vehicle??if so there is an error in the system.
If the timing chain on a 02 cavilier is broken, can it still get spark?
Where's your crank angle sensor located? It's very possible that the ignition isn't firing because the ECU isn't detecting engine rotation due to the camshaft(s) not rotating because of your broken timing chain.

Keep in mind that your engine will never run as long as your timing chain is broken. Fix this first. Do not ever crank an engine over if it's timing belt/chain is broken. If it's an interference engine, you could wreck every valve in your cylinder head from the pistons hitting them.
if your timing chain is broken, then you cannot crank the engine.otherwise everything will be messed up, you going to break plenty of parts.

i think your problem is purely electrical, clean up electrical connections from your electrical modoles, check battery ground contacts, broken fuses or relays.

sometimes these type of problem was caused by a shorted wire to ground. recheck your wiring connections and most of all replace your ignition switch

    hope this help
If the belt was broken, the cam wouldn't turn. Can you see the cam or valves in the Oil fill port? If so, do they move when you crank?

There should also be at least one piece of plastic cover that can come off to see the belt.
one easy way to find out if your timming chain is broke take your valve cover off turn the key and see if your rockers are moving if not then the chain is broke and yes the car will spark just not at the right time because its controled by the computer i repaired a timming chain on a car with a broken chain and it still had spark it was just firing at the wrong time
If your timing chains is broken, the car shouldn't start. It may give you a crank, but it shouldn't start. You should check to see if your car uses a chain or a belt. The thing is that timing chains usually last forever, whereas belts tend to get ruined much quicker. The other thing is that if it is indeed borken, the computer will shut the car down so it won't start because if it did, you can run the risk of ruining the engine's valves and that will cost you thousands to replace.

The problem with the spark could be that you have either a problem with the computer, or there might be a fuse busted. Check the fuse box and particularly the ones that control the ignition because if you have a busted fuse, than there is no human that can start the car without having that replaced.

    GOOD LUCK
dont try to turn the engine over or you could mess up the valves.i would say put a new chain on first so you can crank the engine and check for spark.ok i think auto zone will check them for you.take off the modules and have then tested, but you better get a new chain on first, you need to be able to crank the engine to determine if you got spark.
Possibly the camshaft positioning sensor. If it were your timing chain, you would more than likely have a car that does not run. Timing will cause it to have broken or bent valves, from where the piston went up on either the compression or exhaust stroke, which only happens with timing problems. Hope thats not the case.

    +1 on chains only

What is the proper routing for a timing chain (or cam chain) for my '86 Kawasaki KLR250?

I've looked around and can't find anything on the net. Specifically - The chain now is too loose and the tensioner won't even make it tight. (which it should put tension on the chain) I had the head off for repair and didn't take close enough attention to the cam chain routing. There is a pulley in the side of the head that is for the timing chain to run against... I don't know if the back side of the chain runs under and over the pulley or the inside part of the chain runs over the pulley... It's kind of hard to get at to change and I was wondering if someone knows this model well enough to tell me how it goes. -Thanks-

Which hondas have to have the timing belt or chain changed?

    just wondering
Which hondas have to have the timing belt or chain changed?
any civic older than 05 has a belt and should be changed around 105k miles(except the 01 to present si), any accord 02 and older with a 4cyl engine around 105k miles and v6 are all belt driven at this time, same 105k miles (accord v6, pilot, odyssey), 97-01 cr-v at 105k miles as well. the 06 and new civic are now chain driven as well as 03 and newer accords, elements,cr-v and fit. the only time we change the chains on these vehicles is when they stretch (and yes they do stretch) and normaly we see this on vehicles with 120k or more miles that have not been getting their oil changes at regular intervals.
Which hondas have to have the timing belt or chain changed?
Chains wear out guides tensioners and sprockets too. Timing belts wear down idler wheels tensioner wear. Each and every car has a different belt change milage some cars can break belts and not bend valves others break belts and need new motors. Most Cam Chain drive engines don't need any maintence unless the chain starts making noise. And most chain drive engines are interference motors so valves do hit the pistons. Consult the owners manual and service manuals before doing any crankshaft rotation with the belt or chain broken.
All of them, @ different intervals. normal maintenance.
Depends which honda you have. Anything from 2001 and before are likely to have belts which recommend every 60k miles. The new motors use chains that are recommended for every 90k miles.
I believe all Hondas have a timing belt that needs to be changed every so often. I forget the interval. It might be something like every 60k miles.

The exception is the new Honda Fit which has a timing chain. I don't believe the chains ever need to be replaced. Ot atleast not as often as a rubber belt.
All Honda's that are equipped with timing belts must be replaced at approximately 100,000km and newer models at 160,000km. The latest Honda's have timing chains and don't need replacing. Every second belt replacement should also include the water pump. As the tension of the pulley will have changed and it will have a tendency to leak..... so to save money on labour change the pump every second belt change....My last Honda had over 500,000km before I traded it....it is still going strong with its new owner.

With regular engine oil changes (especially synthetic oil), a timing %26quot;chain%26quot; lasts longer than you will. A timing %26quot;belt%26quot; has to be replaced periodically.

Go with Paul on this my friend. A chain should last much, much longer than a belt and yours certainly shouldn't have failed at that mileage. There was an issue a while ago, as he points out.
For how many miles we have to change vauxhall agila timing chain?my car's chain has broken at 52000 miles.?
Normally you would change the timing drive at 60.000 or three years or whatever comes first .
First of all it depends on the quality of the belt but normally it must be replaced after 50000-60000 miles
chains generally don't break it is probably the cam belt which is made of rubber, usually they should be replaced at 60000 miles or 40000 for a diesel, often breaking wrecks the engine too
Most vehicle manufacturers recommend you replace the timing chain/belt at 50,000 miles. Sounds to me yours lasted its planned life cycle.
A timing chain should last 100k+ as opposed to a timing belt which the other posters are referring to which should be changed around the 60k mark as a general rule.

Check with your local main dealer if this work isn't covered by the Agila timing chain recall which happened a couple of years ago, you might get it done free.

Could I get conformation on a Mazda 6 2.0litre DEIS 2003 TIMING BELT OR CHAIN AND WHEN TO CHANGE?
Hi, 2003 Mazda6 with 2.0L engine likes Mazda6 2.3L and 3.0L has timing CHAIN. Regular engine oil change will help chain and chain guides last a long time. If you have to remove the chain, special tools are needed to align camshafts and crankshaft. You will also see a small chain at the bottom. It is for running oil pump.

The new Mazda 2.0L engine is not a same old 2.0L timing belt engine that was used in US 2002 Mazda 626 and older and other models around the world.

Mazda6 with 2.0L engine option is not available in US and Canada market since 2003 until today. It is available in Europe, Middle east, Asia, along side the Mazda6 with 2.3L engine.

    mazda 6 uses 2.3L engine

2.0L is not on mazda 6 models so what are you talking about?

if it a mazda 6 2.3L dont need to change your belt because is chain

and if it a 2.0L that uses belt and need to be replace at 70k miles but that depends on your location, canada and california sugest at 100k while other locations can vary from 50k to 75k miles

My 98 saturn stalled on a major road this morning. When I tried to start it again it popped. Maybe timing?

I was thinking timing because there is power to the engine it just will not turn over. My timing chain was changed in 5/07.
My 98 saturn stalled on a major road this morning. When I tried to start it again it popped. Maybe timing?
Maybe it seized up, tow it to a shop and have it checked tomorrow.

yeaah it could be the timing belt. Can you see the valve cam thru the oil cap??
Will it not turn over or not start they are 2 different things.
    I would say timing

  • What is the mileage at which the timing belt/chain of the Nissan Altima Model 2003 2.5S needs to be changed?

My car is at 88,000miles. I bought it at 74000 miles and have performed regular oil change and inspection. Other than an annoying battery failure last week at 88000 miles and a chronic front brake jarring inspite of several times to a workshop, I have not had any major complaint.

My question is what are the things I should ask the Nissan Service to do at 90,000 mile service. My friends are scaring me with the Timing belt scenario.
What is the mileage at which the timing belt/chain of the Nissan Altima Model 2003 2.5S needs to be changed?
You have a timing CHAIN (metal),

    not timing BELT (rubber).

Chains are designed to last the life of the engine. Don't touch it.

There is a rubber belt in your engine bay, the Serpentine Belt, that drives your alternator among other things. If that belt goes, your car will come to a stop. That belt should be inspected regularly.
What is the mileage at which the timing belt/chain of the Nissan Altima Model 2003 2.5S needs to be changed?
Well don't be too scared it is fine but If I were you i would have had it done when i bought it if it didn't already have it done at 60,000 miles which is usually when you should change the timing belt at your 60,000 mile service. But timing belts will go 100,000 miles easy but most people do not go that many miles in the span of 5 years and they usually have it done at 60,000 miles because it is estimated at 5 years you get that mileage on average. timing belts are very bad if they brake though, So I would have it done asap because if it snaps a whole lot of other stuff can go with it.

How do I replace Timing Belt On Chrysler Lebaron?

I have a 89 Chrysler Lebaron that I am going to change out the timing belt. I have changed many timing chains on 350 chevy's before, but this will be my first belt on a 4 cylinder. Are there line up notches or what?
How do I replace Timing Belt On Chrysler Lebaron?
Get a manual for this first thing. It will make it so much easier. This is not a close tolerance engine so no worries. I love doing these usually about two to three hours with no lift. When you get the timing belt cover off. You will see two lines on the cam gear. They are designed to line up to the flat part of the valve cover/ head. The crank gear is also marked it will line up easy. When you see you will understand. If the belt is not broken and just doing for maint. I would mark the belt and gears. Then count the teeth at the marks and put marks on the new belt. That way you know you have the right belt. It will have the same number of teeth. Line every thing up before you pull the old belt off. Mark the top of the cam. I usually use the small bottles of scrath repair paint. But finger nail polish will work. White or red is best. Mark one tooth on the cam and belt. Mark one tooth on the balancer shaft and belt. Do the same for the crank. Remove the old belt. Mark the top mark cam or c. Put a line in same spot on new belt make sure its a tooth. Cound the lines to the balancer shaft mark. Do the same to the new belt mark it. After you mark the crank line count the rest of the teeth to the cam. New belt will be the same or its wrong. I do this when the marks are hard to see or its a close tolerace engine. You cannot mess up with this process. The new belt will have all the marks just line it to the gears. You are done. Do not tightend the timing belt to much or it will whine. Sometimes the whine will go away when the belt stretches. If you have more questions let me know.
How do I replace Timing Belt On Chrysler Lebaron?
do yourself a favor and buy a manual for it and it will tell what marks to line up
its a pretty easy one as far as belts go you will ned to take the plastic covers off and unbolt the pasenger side motor mount fromt he chasis

take the crank pully off.. there willbe a mark.. usually a dot on it.. then on the intermediate gear that runs the distributer there willbe a mark also.. afterryou get those lined up take the distributer cap off and verify its pointing correctly

On the top end if its a N/A car there willbe a hole in the upper pully that will line up witht he rubber nub sticking up thru the valve cover line it up there

be sure you do not overtighten the belt they have a tendancy to break if overtightened

also rememebr to manually spin the engine twice to make sure the dots stay lined up and stays at lined up.. Its a non interference engine so there is no worry of accedental damage
If I'm not mistaken that is a V-6 side winder in there, with double overhead cam? It's not an easy job, get a book on it at autozone for 12 bucks, you not only have to line up both cams, and the crank, the water pump is run off of it too, I used every trick I know and it was a bear, no room, no access, not enough hands, it's not like a chevy at all. The serpentine belt goes around it all and all the pulleys have splines on them. Good luck.
Yes, if it is a signle cam than it will be a notch on the pulley that lines up with the notch on the block, if it is dual than the notches on the cams line up with eatchother, dont forget to line up the notches on the oil pump and cranshaft also..

2002 Nissan Altima 3.5L (stick shift) with 87,000 miles. When should I change timing belt/chain?

Alright, you've got the Altima w/the maxima motor- I have a maxima myself, but i'm unsure of when manuf. recomm. this changed- there are a few nissan master tech's on here that can probably tell you the exact mileage marker, John Paul if you're out there holla...
2002 Nissan Altima 3.5L (stick shift) with 87,000 miles. When should I change timing belt/chain?
If it is a belt it wouldn't at all to change it every 50,000 miles the belts wear out much faster than the chains. I have had belt break and ruin a head before, and that runs into more money than changing the timing belt.
2002 Nissan Altima 3.5L (stick shift) with 87,000 miles. When should I change timing belt/chain?
go to www.automobilerepaireasy.com they will send you a maintenance scedule and help you replace the timing chain or belt. they offer a great service i use them all the time
I believe it has a timing chain. Check your owners manual to be sure.

Chains should be good for 150k.

Does my 2004 Toyota Camry LE (4 cylinder) have a timing belt or a timing chain?

The maintenance schedule says that the timing belt needs to be changed after 90k miles, but I have been told that my Camry does not have a timing belt.... If I have a timing chain, I assume that I don't have to worry about replacing it, right?
Does my 2004 Toyota Camry LE (4 cylinder) have a timing belt or a timing chain?
It has a chain. No need to worry about it.
Does my 2004 Toyota Camry LE (4 cylinder) have a timing belt or a timing chain?
Damn belt. I was so proud of Toyota using chains. But they are getting sloppy like G.M. with aluminum engines too.
This car has a timing chain and gears. You should still have it checked, because you could still break it. Also you should check it to make sure your timing is ok.
I am pretty sure the 04 has the belt. The newer ones might have the chain.
your book should know what its talking about.i think its a belt.

O2 eclipse v6 have a timing belt or chain?

does my 2002 eclipse gt with a 3.0 V6 have a timing belt or timing chain, and how often does it need to be changed.
O2 eclipse v6 have a timing belt or chain?
Your car has a timing belt, and pretty much all Japanese made cars have timing belts. The timing belt should usually be changed at the 60,000-80,000 mile check up/tune up and about every 60,000-80,000 miles after that.

  • Is the timing chain on a 92 chevy lumina 3.1L exposed so that it could be tampered with or damaged.?

My car is running rough(off and on) and my cousin said that it was the timing chain. I have had some work done on the fuel line and i am wondering if someone could have tampered with it while fixing the fuel filter. it didn't run rough like that before i had them change the fuel filter. I had the fuel filter changed because there wasnt enough gas getting to the engine. I also changed the spark plugs.
Is the timing chain on a 92 chevy lumina 3.1L exposed so that it could be tampered with or damaged.?
the timing chain is located on the side of the engine, it can not be tampered with because it's sealed up. it would take quite a long time for anyone to get to the timing chain.

Your motor uses coil packs instead of a distributor, so timing is computer controlled and can not be adjusted.

You cousin is mistaken. The chain should last the life of the motor, as long as it isn't run low on oil frequently it won't stretch out like people claim.

changing the fuel filter is good, makes the pump not have to work as hard.

Have you tried a bottle of fuel injector cleaner? anything over $6 is good, I like Seafoam, Techron, Gumout (yellow bottle) and Redline SI-1. anythign else is just kerosene and worthless, like anything that says STP on it.
Is the timing chain on a 92 chevy lumina 3.1L exposed so that it could be tampered with or damaged.?
You almost need to remove the engine to access the timing chain on this engine.

At the very least you need to support the engine, remove the passenger side motor mount from the body. Jack up the motor

Remove the serpentine belt, alternator, power steering pump, water pump, motor mount, crank shaft pulley, and timing chain cover.

Tamper with the timing chain somehow but still keep the engine in a running condition

Put all of this back together.

This would be about a full days work.

Sounds like an awful lot of extra work for someone to do to get a job changing a timing chain.
Sounds like to me through being a Mechanic, they yes tampered with something on your engine, I make no statements here because This is something I have to check with my own eye's to be sure.
If you dont trust the garage why bother letting them do repairs? If some one was to tamper with your car im sure they would not go to the timing chain, for its labor involved to get to it
My advice, better go to a mechanic that you really know, so that you could observe and learn at the same time. Having and maintaining a car is not a joke.
That's impossible to tamper with the timing chain on that engine Its behind the font engine cover and to get at it you need to take off all the accessory and the front cover it self. Its about a 5 hour job to do all of this if its your fist time. I would get the fuel injectors flushed out your engine uses the older style multi tech injectors which are very sensitive to dirt particles. The extra fuel pressure may have loosened deposits in the fuel system and now they are stuck in the injectors. The timing chain on the 3.1L can lest well over 200K before it wears out so the possibility of it being out of time is wrong. Your car would be running like crap 24/7 if the engine was not timed right. You should also get the intake cleaned out also. the car is 17 years old so that's allot of time for deposits to accumulate in the intake manifold. The plug gap needs to be at 45 thousands on those engines I still have the owners manual and that's what the gap should be at. Also the 3.1L has electronic ignition system with coil packs so engine timing is computer controlled.

When should the timing chain be changed on a 2003 HONDA CRV?

Starting in 2003 Honda changed the engine to be driven by a Timing Chain as appossed to a Timing Belt.

All Honda's 98' and older that have a Timing Belt should be replaced every 7 years or 105,000 miles or every 60,000 miles in severe conditions, However with your vehicle having a Timing Chain it never requires replacement other than if you should have a specific problem.
When should the timing chain be changed on a 2003 HONDA CRV?
    every 60 tho or so
When should the timing chain be changed on a 2003 HONDA CRV?
Wow, didn't even know CRVs came with a timing chain. Anyways, timing chains don't need replacement.
    Honda recommands at every 90k
    100K miles i believe.

its usually recommended to do at 90K though

Should i change the timing chain or belt of my vauxhall frontera B diesel 2.2 DTL 16V 1999?after how long?

its a chain and unless its noisey then it should last the lifetime of the car but they prone too stretching round about the 100,000 mile mark and get noisey

What is a cost estimate for parts & labor for a new timing chain for a 2002 Nissan Altima w/ 3.5L V6?

Also, I've heard on some cars the water pump should be changed at the same time. Is this the case for the Altima w/ the 3.5L V6?
What is a cost estimate for parts %26amp; labor for a new timing chain for a 2002 Nissan Altima w/ 3.5L V6?
The timing chain guides wear away and break and the chain becomes noisy. Yes anything under the timing cover worn or broken also needs to be changed. If the car has 100,000 or more mileage water pump may not last another trip around the odometer. Because many Nissan Technicians remove the entire power train to have room to remove and install the timing chain covers. Several things to think about because some time we also need valve cover gaskets spark plugs motor mounts and new radiators CV joints and all those extras can get expensive. Keep in mind a new car would cost more but if your car has 200,000 it might be time to trade out of the 8 year old sedan.
What is a cost estimate for parts %26amp; labor for a new timing chain for a 2002 Nissan Altima w/ 3.5L V6?
The timing chain should last the life of the engine.
Its probably best to give your location when asking this question. Labor prices very across the country. In most cases we dont remove the engine and trans from the vehicle but as paul said some techs do to make it easier. There is a standard amount of flat rate time listed in a flat rate manual. I think it is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 hrs.Dont quote me on that though. We usually do them under warranty and have not done many customer pay. If I recall it is somewhere around 1500 or 1600 dollars customer pay parts and labor at our shop. Which is at our rate of $115.00 an hour. I am in California where everything is expensive. So if your not in this state it is probably cheaper.

Who knows if the pontiac montana comes with a belt or a chain for the timing chain.?

i would like to know if all of the pontiac v6 3.4 Montana's have a timing chain or do some use belts. my van has reached 124000 and am worried if it has a belt that needs to be changed or not to worry because they all come with a chain.
Who knows if the pontiac montana comes with a belt or a chain for the timing chain.?
It has a chain. There is always a possibility of it breaking, or guides getting worn (which would cause noise), but it's very slight compared to a belt.
Who knows if the pontiac montana comes with a belt or a chain for the timing chain.?
Go to www.partsamerica.com and enter in your vehicle. Then look up the engine parts for timing. It will list either a belt or chain.

  • What is the difference between a drive belt and a timing chain?

I have a 2003 G35 and I need to know which one I should be changing. Currently has 128,000 miles.
What is the difference between a drive belt and a timing chain?
Timing chains normally last the life of the car assuming routine engine oil changes are done. Other drive or accessory belts like the serpentine belt or other belts external to the engine are changed as needed. Some engines use a %26quot;timing belt%26quot; rather than a %26quot;timing chain%26quot; internal to the engine in which case the timing belt is typically changed at 100,000 miles or so on the newest model cars.
What is the difference between a drive belt and a timing chain?
    HI

it depends on what you have.... If by Drive belt you mean the timing belt its the same as a timing chain but for a 4 cylinder. V8's and V6's have timing chains while 4 cylinder's have a Timing belt... A drive belt is what runs you accessories like the alternator and power steering and water pump.

If you are talking about the Timing belt or chain that should be changed by a professional its not an easy tasks.

    good luck

    tim
A drive belt is as the name implies, used to drive an Accessories such as power steering pump or A/C compressor or alternator.

A timing belt is used to synchronize the engine crank with the engine cam shaft.

The timing chain does the same job as the timing belt, but does not require replacing as does the timing belt.

Now the question is do you have a belt or a chain, if the front of your engine is covered with plastic covers, it has a belt if the front is all metal, you have a chain. Hope this helps
The drive belt is to drive the water pump, alternator, power steering pump AC compressor ,but the timing chain is to drive the camshaft which open and close the valves and to fix the firing order of the engine
If the engine has skipped time, it will not run at all. It will chug as you try to start it. The serpentine belt is due for a replacement if not already done.

What can cause my truck to spit and spatter.i've changed the timing chain.?

did you get the timing gears lined up the right way? and if you had the distributor out did you get it back in the right way ? it also could be the fuel filter too.
What can cause my truck to spit and spatter.i've changed the timing chain.?
an interruption in the ignition spark or the fuel supply can also cause sputtering.
What can cause my truck to spit and spatter.i've changed the timing chain.?
    Not Correctly Timed
I could be something with the fuel system, MAP sensor, O2 Sensors, computer or a couple other things. Nothing too difficult to change if you can figure out what to replace. You should try to get codes pulled from it and see what that says, usually places will let you borrow a code reader or rent one without having to purchase one. I'd do that and maybe take the codes into a shop or dealership and discuss with a mechanic that knows the truck.

98 Malibu Timing Chain Tensioner Problems?

I have changed my timing chain tensioner 5 times on my 4 cyl. Malibu. The last time I used an older model tensioner. But i still only get 3 months before my chain starts rattling again. The newer model tensioners will stick in the retracted position. While the older model tensioner wears out the shoe very quickly. I am at my wits end on this. Could someone please help me with this problem. I am so tired of replacing this tensioner every 3 months. Thanks for any input.
98 Malibu Timing Chain Tensioner Problems?
i own a repair shop, and i can tell you whats causing this to happen, the only oil this thing gets is the return oil from the front of the engine, under the intake manifold there's a drain port that may be stopped up or need filled off some to direct the oil in to the path of the chain and gears,i have had this same problem, but not from the Malibu's, from some trucks, you may have to remove the intake to correct this problem, but really that's all the oil the chain and gears get, because the oil level rides down below the point that a bottom gear couldn't pick it up,so it rely,s on what it can get from the return passage way, sometimes there is a burr in it from the factory ,that causes it to re-direct the oil away from it,and this is whats eating the pads up on the tension er,it took me a few tries to finally get one right, but i learned all of his the hard way,it may take a while to get it to where the oil flows good to it,but that will take care of it,good luck,i hope this help,s.
98 Malibu Timing Chain Tensioner Problems?
maybe you need to replace the chain and shoe
well first of all you shouldnt have to replace it that often. you should make sure the tensioner is in its right spot and at the right tension, then make sure belt is on correctly. check the other pulleys one of those could be loose or wobbly too. either way if you have a new tensioner start lookin elsewhere for the problem, hey you might even need a new belt, maybe its been stretched out.
try replacing the chain and maybe gears, everything wears together
I am not up on the Malibu, but I would go ahead and spend the extra money and replace the gears and shoes with the chain and tensioner. The gears might have a little bit of wear as well as the chain. If both have a slight bit of wear added together that just might be enough to cause the trouble. If the chain has enough slap in it, it will slap the tensioner into itself and will not release damaging the spring. I use to be an auto parts manager and I had seen this problem a many times. Not saying that this is your problem, just that it might be.

How to install vortec timing chain. 5.7 1997 gmc 3500?

How do I know if my timing chain is installed correctly. The truck starts and drives but is slugish. I rebuilt the engine 2 years ago and has never been as good as new. I just took off the timing cover and here is what i see. With #1 piston at tdc and the dist rotor pointing to the 8 mark (#1 connector) I see my timing gears as so.

Crank gear dot is at 12 oclock position.

cam gear is at the 12 0clock position. (If this is incorrect would it even start?)

Any Ides, before i change the timing chain.

This is a 1997 GMC 1 ton crew cab 5.7 vortec. at breakin the vortrc seemed to run good. shortly after it ran doggish It passed Immissions and inspection with flyin colors. it runs and drives and has recently been giving a p1345 code and will now not pass immisions untill i get the code to go away. Whe n I rebuilt the engine I reused the double chain and gear set cause it looked more durable, but I now think that was a mistake. I have the new one and its going in this weekend. any experience with this is appreciated.
How to install vortec timing chain. 5.7 1997 gmc 3500?
I do agree they should be pointing at each other. But did you try turning the engine another revolution? but P1345 is for the CrankShaft position sensor. To fix a CSP after replacing it or setting timing on these trucks you need to connect it to a scanner. The timing is completely computer controlled.

Vortec Timing, 96 to 98. This is very common and after dealing with it a couple times on my own I felt I should add to this FAQ. Listed below is good for a v6 or v8, (just line your mark up to the 6, not the 8.) There are two processes to follow, I will list the more favorable A and alternate B:

    A:

First if you are doing a smaller job like intake gaskets etc, you want to mark the distributor. Mark the distributor housing to the intake with a grease pencil. Also mark where the rotor is pointing to on the base of the housing. I suggest doing this at TDC #1 compression stroke so that if you accidentally bump the motor over you can put it back. on tear down to find TDC turn the engine over manually until you line up the line on the balancer to the timing mark on the timing cover. Check the distributor and it should be pointing to a #8 in the housing of the distributor. you will note a 6 and an 8. The 6 is where it would have pointed if this was a 6 cylinder. If pointing to that little 8 then you are at TDC #1 compression, if it is pointing in the opposite direction you are at the top of the exhaust/intake stroke #1, not compression and you need to turn the crank a full 360 additional degrees.

on reassembly just make sure you are TDC compression and slide the distributor back in. If it doesn't sit flat on the intake try wiggling the rotor back and forth a bit to get the distributor gear to seat in the oil shaft. If this doesn't work you may need a long flat head screw driver to turn the shaft and properly align it.

    B:

If that doesn't work, or you forgot to make your mark or you did a full rebuild with new timing gears and need to get it set this is what you do. Find TDC #1 compression stroke. How do you find it? I found if you are alone the best is with a compression tester. you can turn it until you see it build pressure. I recommend you do this with all the spark plugs out, makes it a lot easier to turn over. If you have 3 hands or more available, you could have some turn the motor over while another puts a finger on the #1 spark plug hole and feel for pressure, once you feel pressure line the timing marks up. Being at TDC you can now move on. Get your distributor. Look on the lower part of the housing and you should see a white vertical line painted on it. Turn the distributor gear until the drilled hole lines up with the white line. look at the rotor and it should now point about at that #8. Stab the Distributor in with the wire harness connector facing towards the fire wall(more towards driver side). Once seated see if you can line of the rotor to the #8. If you can and can lock it down and put the cap on then you are good, if not you may need to re stab on a new tooth but the end result is you want the rotor pointing the the #8 on the housing. (now I am not talking about #8 cylinder, but in the distributor there is a 6 and 8, tiny but it is there.)

That should fire it up, if not then you messed something up and start over. You may need to pull your spark plugs and dry them (air compressor helps here) as I struggled with fouled plugs leading me to think I was wrong on the timing but wasn't.

Lastly once done with A or B, you should get a scan tool that will display the cam retard and you need to turn the distributor to set this to zero.
How to install vortec timing chain. 5.7 1997 gmc 3500?
The dots should point at each other crank 12 o'clock and cam 6 o'clock, no wonder it runs bad. You don't need to change the chain, just point the dots together. You really need to get yourself a Haines or Chiltons manual so you will not make another silly mistake.
I believe the cam gear dot should be at 6 o'clock and the crank at 12 o'clock.

My S-10 chevy 2.2-4 clyinder just turned 100k.should I change the timing chain soon?

I had one last 220K miles and drove like a mad man, spinning tires and popping clutch every chance I got. The 2.2 4 bangers are strong stout engines. Take an abuse and run forever as long as oil is changed regularly and coolant is in there and gas. Once you get one hot then you may consider on rebuilding it though. If you are a careful driver it should easily last to 200K. I have never seen a person change a timing chain in one cause it went out and know a lot of people that have the S-10's with the 2.2. Only time I seen them change them is after they did a re-ring kit or complete rebuild while the engine was already tore down. Usually you can hear the slack in the chain if you pay attention while out in front with the engine running and slowly rev it up then release the throttle quickly though, replace if you do hear that.

    yes
My S-10 chevy 2.2-4 clyinder just turned 100k.should I change the timing chain soon?
Very soon, unless you like walking, and/or have money for a new engine.
Check your owner's manual or ask the Service Manager at the dealer for the correct interval for changing timing belts or chains. Good luck!
do it as soon as possible
I would keep on driving it. Change your oil every 3000-4000 miles, and keep up the other maintenance items on the truck. That engine isn't particularly prone to %26quot;chunking the chain%26quot;. It might go another 100k with no problem.
i say no if u are a calm, slow driver.

Yes, if u frequently have moments of uncontrollable road rage. lol
yes I definetly would change it. I don't have a pickup truck but I changed the timing belt in my bonneville at about 100,000 miles and it was still kickin at 200,000 when I sold it

  • Does the honda crv 2004 need a timing belt or does it have a timing chain?

my crv has done 50,000 miles, in the manual it says the timing belt should be changed, but my mecanic freind says it has a timing chain is this true
Does the honda crv 2004 need a timing belt or does it have a timing chain?
    Should be a belt

    Replacement interval

up to 1998 60,000 miles or every 5 years

from 1998 72,000 miles or every 8 years
Does the honda crv 2004 need a timing belt or does it have a timing chain?
http://www.samarins.com/reviews/cr-v02.h鈥?/a> schroll down to where it says Engine. It says NO timing belt.
I think it has a belt. i have a 1998 CR-V and i have 134,000 miles on it and the belt is just about to go. and I have never changed it. The Honda dealer wants over $900.00 to change it. I just looked it up and the part goes for $65.00 so how much labor is involved. I'm going to be looking into getting a newer car rather than fixing this one. It has been a great car and still works fine except for this i've never had any problems with it.
Its probably a belt.. Pop the cover off an have a look!

Does a Honda Civic 2004 have a Timing Belt or Timing Chain?

I have a Honda Civic 2004 and I was wondering what does it have; a timing belt or timing chain. And could somebody plz tell me in how many miles it needs to be changed. It has 94k miles on it.
Does a Honda Civic 2004 have a Timing Belt or Timing Chain?
I think the recommendation for changing the timing belt for that year and model was 105,000 miles or every 7 years whichever comes first.
Does a Honda Civic 2004 have a Timing Belt or Timing Chain?
It has a timing belt on the drivers side of the motor. I think its best to change timing belts on Hondas at about 120,000 miles. When you are doing so, its best to change the water pump as well.

Timing chain replacement on my 1997 infiniti I30?

I have an infiniti I30 and am driving to florida from texas. it's got a little over 180000 miles on it. I got the serpentine belt changed yesterday cause it was cracking. The guy said I also should change the timing chain cause if it snaps it hurts motor and other things. It's not making any noise or anything right now and it is expensive to change the timing chain. Should I get it changed because of the mileage on car and a long drive ahead or should I wait until it starts making noises?

Also what else would I make sure is ready before I leave for Florida, I have not taken a big trip like that before.
Timing chain replacement on my 1997 infiniti I30?
Force of habit for this tech, I guess. Timing chains do fail, but not very often; if it goes, yes, it will take out the top half of the engine, but unless you have some reason to suspect it's on its last links, I'd let it be. I've only heard of one instance of a chain failing in a VQ30DE. (I have a 2000 I30.)
Timing chain replacement on my 1997 infiniti I30?
You are most likely on borrowed time with this timing chain. This is an interference engine. This means the valves must be in the correct position as the piston reaches the top of a stroke or the valve will crash into the piston. When this happens the engine is usually junk.

Interference engines usually require the timing chain or belts replaced ar regular intervals for this reason. The belt or chain can fail without warning. It doesn't need to make any noise to fail. When it fails the engine simply quits and won't start. One or more valves will either be bent or broken. The cylinder head, piston, or cylinder can be damaged.

How much will it be to change my toyota camry 1993 timing chain?

I think that's a timing belt in that car, and it'll likely run $400-$600 to replace.

Where is the water pump? on a 350? and how do i change the timing chain?

The engine fan is hooked to the water pump. I would take it to a shop. The timing chain call for special tools to reset the timing after it is in stalled with the basic time mark es lined up. If you wily want to do this. Go to the Library and do your homework first and see if you want really do it. If you're doing a larger cam it is another ball game to get it dial in. You can contact me in the future, if you need more help
Where is the water pump? on a 350? and how do i change the timing chain?
water pump is right up front and center on the motor. to change the timing chain, you'll have to remove the belt, water pump, and timing cover.

  • How Often Do I Need To Replace The Timing Chain in My 03 Sebring 2.7l?

I have a 2003 chrysler sebring sedan lxi. It now has 64k miles on it and it runs great. I know the history of the 2.7l but i have babied this car with synthetic and 3500 mile oil changes. I was wondering when it would be necessary to have the timing chain and water pump replaced?

    Thanks in advance%26gt;
How Often Do I Need To Replace The Timing Chain in My 03 Sebring 2.7l?
Well there are no plastic gears in there, and the '03 has the redesigned tensioner system and is thus much more reliable than the earlier engines.

The timing chain is not replaced as a general maintenance item. The water pump is separate of the timing chain, and should be replaced when and if it fails. It would be wise though to flush the cooling system if you have not already done so. That should be done at least every three years.
How Often Do I Need To Replace The Timing Chain in My 03 Sebring 2.7l?
if you are lucky ...never... but if and when you need to opt for all metal gears ...they are way better than the plastic crap they put in cars now of days
if it has a timing chain... then, as soon as it breaks..

How to change a timing chain on a 1989 ford f150?

How do the timing marks line up on a Mazda B2600?

i am changing the timing chain on a 1991 Mazda b2600i pickup %26amp; need to know how the timing marks on the gears are supposed to be set %26amp; is it on exhaust or intake stroke?
How do the timing marks line up on a Mazda B2600?
the old mazda b series 4 cyl. had no timing marks.you just split the lobes on the cam ,pointing them in the airand roughly even.the crank was set at tdc, what a pain with the timing chain tensioner.if you slacked off the timing chain to much, the tensioner would pop out and into the oil pan.was never ever recomended to push start them as the timing chain tensioner could pop out if the motor slightly turned backwards.

Does a 2001 Ford Sport Trac How Front & Rear Timing Chains?

Hi I have a 2001 Ford Sport Trac. I am told to change the timing chain you must change both front and back and it can be a 12+ Hour Job. I am trying to find a motor diagram and find out why it has front and back timing chains?

I am not a newer vehicle mechanic but it seems extremely odd to have both front and rear timing chains? Can someone help me out with a answer. Maybe a link to a motor diagram? Thanks
Does a 2001 Ford Sport Trac How Front %26amp; Rear Timing Chains?
The rear timing chain (or %26quot;cassette%26quot; as it's called in Ford lingo) is the chain that drives bank #1 (passenger side) cam. The front timing chain drives bank #2 (driver side) cam. There is a also a primary %26quot;jackshaft%26quot; chain that is driven by the crankshaft in order to enable both banks to be driven through a common shaft. The reason for this peculiar layout is because this engine is a %26quot;derivative%26quot; of the 4.0L OHV V6 engine it replaces. Ford simply installed a dummy shaft in place of where the camshaft used to reside on the original OHV engines.

But above all else, the job you describe SHOULD NOT be carried out by anyone unfamiliar with this particular engine. There are NO timing marks on any of the drive sprockets, nor are they key to their corresponding shafts. To time this particular engine requires use of FIVE dedicated Ford/Rotunda tools that hold all relevant parts in proper position. Failing to carry this procedure out correctly, will result in the bending of ALL valves with 100% certainty!!! Therefore, it is best left to a Ford dealer technician to carry out. If that's the 4.0 overhead cam then yes it has a front and back chain one to each head and a chain from crank to the shaft that both those drive from. It's a real winner. There have been service bulletins for updated parts and I'd make sure it gets all the newer parts in hopes it might stay together for a while.
