1998 BMW 328 is timing belt or chain?

Im looking at purchasing a 98 BMW 328 is with 54k miles on it. Does it have a timing belt or a timing chain. When should this be changed? What are the major BMW services that need to be performed for this car?

As stated above, it is a chain. They will normally last the life of the car. That should be 250-300K miles.

One thing you want to be aware of is the cooling system on these cars. If you get to 75K and the water pump hasn't been replaced yet, you are very lucky and should go ahead and replace it. The originals had plastic impellers and they break anywhere from 50-90K miles.

its a timing chain

the last 3 series to use belts were E30s

if the car only has 54k on it

not much

just reg oil changes and fluids

hell the car isnt even broken in

my 1st car was a 98 328is when i got it

it had 60k on it now it has 180k and its been a great car

the only thing i have had to replace is the clutch and rear diff and it was my fault i was playing in the snow
