Does the 1999 Infinity G20 have timing Belt or chain?

Just bought one it has 125k for mile and I need to know if the belt should be changed
Does the 1999 Infinity G20 have timing Belt or chain?
A plastic cover on front of engine indicates a belt, generally no one changes a timing chain, belts are critical.
Does the 1999 Infinity G20 have timing Belt or chain?
It's called a timing belt but its always a chain, never rubber! and expensive to repair if you dont need to. Maybe jit ust needs adjusting.
It's a chain and expensive
You have a timing chain and it never gets replaced unless something very wrong happens and it stretches. And timing belts are made of rubber, I don't know what that other guy is talking about.

86 ford f-150 timing?

im changing timing gears n chain on86 f-150 fi 302 where do marks lineup at ?
86 ford f-150 timing?
Usually, you should line up cylinder 1 at TDC before taking it apart. The dot on the cam and the dot on the crank should be directly across from each other.

Make sure you correctly line up the new gears in the chain before mounting them.
86 ford f-150 timing?
I can't remember for certain anymore. Place the #1 cylinder at top dead center when you start. Makes life way easyer. Seems to me that they may line up across from each other? Either way as long as the engine didn't make any revolutions when the gears and chain were off you can just slap the new parts right in. They will only go one one way and you timing should not be off. Theoretically.
Hi

The little peen marks line up facing each other. One on the main aims at the cam gear between the teeth.
they point to one another, crank up and cam down
Line up the dots on the crank and cam so that they are directly across from each other. Turn crank to #1 cylinder @ TDC and turn cam so that both vlaves are closed.

Which is the intake / exhaust valve? exhaust on right if directly above cylinder?

I just did a major overhaul on this 92 gmc sierra, and the timing is kickin my ****!! i was close, then back to the backfiring! I more than likely went wrong way with dist. but when timing marks were lined up, it spit flame out tbi! I didnt change timing chain cover gasket, so actual timing marks are still unknown!
Which is the intake / exhaust valve? exhaust on right if directly above cylinder?
maybe not timing maybe the hydraulic valves are set too tight. I did that once.
Which is the intake / exhaust valve? exhaust on right if directly above cylinder?
What motor? Remove #1 plug and bring to top dead center. Yes back firing out of tbi is timing. If dstributor was removed, could be 180 degrees out of time. Intake and exhaust change order with each cylinder.
Sound to me that you are one turn out. Remove spark plug on # 1 cyl. Stick your finger in the hole and turn it over slowly. When you feel compression building up continue to the TDC mark. Then set the distributer accordingly. Bob
The intake is usually the bigger, follow an intake manifold runner down to the head.

What would cause low oil pressure Chevrolet 4.8L after timing set change?

Summary:

This pertains to changing the timing gear/chain on a 2000 Silverado 4.8L. Where the engine previously held 40-80# oil pressure, it now will dip completely to nothing on the gauge (check pressure lights) and maximum WOT is 40 psi (which as stated was previously minimum.) Could not replacing the O-Ring on the pickup tube be the culprit?

Below is longer explanation:

Procedure:

Drained Coolant and engine oil.

Disconnected hoses

Removed Fan, Serpentine Belt, Tensioner assembly

Unbolted Water pump

Pulled balancer/pulley

Removed Timing cover

Loosened Oil pan, dropped about 1 inch

Unbolted and unhooked pickup

Removed oil pump

Unbolted Cam gear/chain

Pulled Crank gear

-------

And as per %26quot;directions,%26quot; reversed above procedure for assembly. We %26quot;primed%26quot; the oil pump by blocking one end with %26quot;motor (white lithium) grease,%26quot; filling with oil, and plugging the suction side with more grease before assembly.

This is where our potential mistake--and our need for more experienced help--may have taken place: We did not install a new o-ring on the pickup tube before reinsertion into the oil pump.

My father and I have a great amount of experience (racing background) with 350/400 SBC motors. None at all with the new generation stuff. After discussing this at length, we've concluded this may be the issue. But, before we tear this all back down, we'd like some more insight.

As for the GM %26quot;specs%26quot; (6 to 24#) on oil pressure, we've found that to be inaccurate. Lifter tick occurs at anything from 20psi down. It honestly doesn't clear up until 25-30#. So, although nothing that rotates is damaged, for them to spec this low psi for hydraulic (roller) lifter motors seems nonsense! This is further reinforced by the fact this motor originally held no less than 40# at any time.

The secondary question in all this pertains to the new timing set. The new assembly still allows for (from our perspective) an absurd amount of slack. From observation, this new assembly appears barely better than the 230,000 mile set it replaced! Is this common for these motors? Please keep in mind that our experience pertains to the older SBC engines, in which the chain has barely any noticeable slack.

Thank you all in advance!

What would cause low oil pressure Chevrolet 4.8L after timing set change?
Re-using the old O-ring is a definite no-no. If you don't have a good seal there, the pump will suck air, and pressure will be accordingly lower. And contrary to another poster, the O-ring is not below the oil level.

______________________________________鈥?br>

Lubricate a NEW (their caps, not mine) oil pump screen O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

Push the oil pump screen tube completely into the oil pump prior to tightening the bolt. Do not allow the bolt to pull the tube into the pump.
What would cause low oil pressure Chevrolet 4.8L after timing set change?
Sounds about right but you didn't mention what weight oil you put in. If the oil is too thick you will get lower oil pressure. I like 5W-30 as an all around good oil for normal driving.
Sound like the O ring may have moved out of place, cut, or split and now you are getting some air in system. Small air bubbles in the oil can be compressed causing lifters to collapse as pure fluid can't be compressed. A one minute shortcut could of caused you hours of extra work. Now if you ever need to prime a oil pump again just submerge it in oil and spin the gears in the pump a few times and your done, no need to plug up with grease that will slow oil getting in. The factory oil pressure spec is taken with a external gauge connected to a oil galley, not using a sending unit that is using current resistance to calculate pressure the spec is correct.
You have more experience with GM than I, so don't take this with too much weight. But I don't understand how the pickup or pump could be involved with timing chain and sprockets?

But beyond that, yes, I would worry about the pickup sucking air.

And I don't get the pump priming idea.

I understand the grease would prevent leak down, but pumps always leak down and are fine with leak down. So I would not have put grease in the pump openings. If you really want to prime, I would take the oil pressure switch our and for oil in there, under pressure. That will fill all the galleries.

I think the grease can trap air and make the pump not suck the oil up properly.

But just my thoughts.
the oring will not be the problem sounds to me you did everything right . sometimes it just take a lot of time for it to prime up. I know it gets irritating at times but from what you are saying I cant think of anything else but just keep letting it run a little more or just repack the oil pump again i have had to do that a couple of times, but on the oring deal i did the same thing once and the dealerships service manager told me that if you think about this long and hard the oring is submerged in oil anyways so he never understood why they would use them in the first place. so please get back with me when you get it going. ok

  • Honda Accord 2005 VTI-L (2.4, 4 Cylinder). Firstly, does it have a timing chain or a timing belt?

My current mileage is 92000 Kms.

    1. At what mileage should the belt be changed if its a belt and not a chain? Is the belt on the left side of the engine about 2 inches wide? spinning over 3-4 pullys? about approx 1 meter long?

    2. What other accessories or part have to be changed? i.e. water pump or tensioner pully? if yes then why do they need to be changed?
Honda Accord 2005 VTI-L (2.4, 4 Cylinder). Firstly, does it have a timing chain or a timing belt?
It does not have a belt.

You therefore do not need to change anything.

Water pump would be changed with a timing belt if it is driven by the timing belt not because it needs to be changed but to save the expense of removing and installing the belt again if the water pump failed.

Since you don't have a belt then there is no need to change the water pump until it needs changing [begins to leak or make noise etc.] No timing belt also mean no tensioner to change.

Note: A 6 cylinder Accord does have a belt.
Honda Accord 2005 VTI-L (2.4, 4 Cylinder). Firstly, does it have a timing chain or a timing belt?
What your describing is the serpentine belt and if this has not been change yet do it.

The car has a chain and should be done at about 60000 miles so you are due.

It's best to replace the water pump and tensioner at the same time you have the timing chain done.

Why do you do this, just proper maintenance, and you would not want to have that chain break then cause more damage.

    Hope this helps
not familiar with the accord vti-l, you must be in europe or austrailia, but the 2005 Accords in the US come with the K24 motor which is a timing chain motor.
I have this car abd researched that prior to buying. You have a chain. You're good for 125K miles. Then it's also the water pump, and may as well do the hoses- preventative maintenance.
Timing chain,no service intervalve, the belt you see is serpentine, which drives AC and alternator, replace when cracked or make noise.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?

I own a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg edition. Its one of the nicest cars I've ever driven. However today the engine malfunctioned and cut off after I switched to 2nd gear and it wouldnt start again. Yes I know how to drive stick and every time I change gears I make sure I press the clutch all the way to the bottom. But today right before the engine cut off there was this weird and nasty grinding sound, I imagine it was the timing chain. the car is used and I know Jetta's need their timing chain changed every 65000 miles before a serious malfunction.I've only had it for one day But this is the first time it has happened to me since its the first Jetta I've ever owned and Im worried about the car, . Was the sound I heard before the car cutted off the timing chain snapping or something else ?
2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?
It sound like a pretty serious problem and you should definitely go to either a VW Dealership or some car shop and have them check it out. Usually they can do it for free.

    '97 dakota timing chain?

i got a V6 '97 dakota..i had it to my mechanic (one my whole family uses) because of a rattle...he said that the timing chai nwas bad...it has 133K almost 134....that i no of it hasnt had one done..it is VERY loud...it sounds like a powerstroke when its stopped at a light or idle...i hear there very common to go in these...in fact the guy im going to have do the job has done quite a few...this sound right? i have replaced the steering shaft....checked my brakes and a,ll is good there...tires are in good shape...had a synthetic oil change a few months back (and new oil filter) i did a tranny flush and put a new filter in that..new air filter..new spark plugs..new idle air control selanoid...and still...its loud and when i turn it on after i have used it alot that day...it hits about 750 RPM...then goes down to like 450-500 RPM... then goes back up to like 650 RPM..and stays there... if it has sat all night (or longer) it hits 700 rpm and stays there...sound like timing chain? espiccely since theres so many miles on it?thanks and God Bless---Nick
    '97 dakota timing chain?
it is more than likely the timing chain and gears in it going bad, usually those need replaced about every 150 thousand in those trucks so yours may be past due on changing it out,why its doing this is its throwing the timing so far out that the computer cant compensate for it any more, and that's causing the running condition your getting on it,good luck.
    '97 dakota timing chain?
It's very common on the 3.9. It will give you warning sign such as the rattle at idle, that you need to change it soon. The newer chain-gear kits have tensioners too.
it could be the chain. it could be so loose that it,s banging against the timing case.

How do u set timing on a 1983 honda 200x three wheeler?

I had to change the head gasket and i have looked every where to find out how to set the timing chain so the it will firer i put the lift down adn the piston top dead center and it wont start. i you have an idea how to set the timing please tell me .
How do u set timing on a 1983 honda 200x three wheeler?
You take the little cap off that is on top of the block on the left side and you will see the flywheel. When you see it, either have someone move the kickstarter down slow or do it yourself with your hand while you lean over the bike and look down at the flywheel. What you are looking for is a mark with a T next to it. when you find it, the engine is at top dead center when it is lined up with the notch that is where you took the cap off.

Next you take the cap off of the cylinder head and align the mark on the cdi to the mark on the head. You will have to take the chain back off to do this of course. when both marks are lined up.. the bike is in time.
How do u set timing on a 1983 honda 200x three wheeler?
You better do a little more research on this, there are other things involved. You'd better release the tensioner on the chain or it will be toast. I toasted one on an XR200 back around that time. Do some research on thumpertalk.com

I have a jeep grand cherokee 1998 with 70000 miles how can i know if i need to change the time chain?

I have a jeep grand cherokee 1998 with 70000 miles how can i know if i need to change the time chain?
the chains go about 150,000. more if properly maintained.
I have a jeep grand cherokee 1998 with 70000 miles how can i know if i need to change the time chain?
If your Jeep came with booklets in the glove compartment, look to see if one has a few pages where owners should keep track of all the maintenance this Jeep has had right down to every oil change. Lots of owners are to lazy to keep these records but should.

The timing chain if cared for properly should last for as long as you own this wonderful Jeep Grand Cherokee.
225,697 and still original in mine, regular maintenance does wonders
Does it run fine? Then you don't need to change the timing chain.

They're considered a lifetime part. Unless it breaks (unusual) or you somehow manage to stretch the heck out of it (also unusual), you won't need to replace it.

If you need to replace it, there will be absolutely no question about whether you need to replace it. It won't run or the timing will be ridiculously bad.

  • Timing Chain Question - The Bill?

Hi .. i posted a question a while ago about my car now i have it back now and have some questions. BMW 316 TI ES 2003

I orignally broke down.. i called the breakdown people. They came and said that the car properly has a sensor not working proper and needed to be taken to a garage.

They took my car to my mechanic.. told him what happened and that there is properly a sensor problem. So my mechanic without checking himself i believe changed the sensor.

    Car still not working..

He then thinks there is a eletrcial problem so then he takes it to have an eletricial test, they say the cars eletric is fine.

he then finally opens up the head and sees that the timing chain had snapped.

all of this is over the course of a month.

he then gets the parts and puts them in the engine..

    about another 3 weeks wait

engine is now starting however a few problems here and there.. warning lights are up etc.

    after another 2 weeks wait..

another guy comes with computer and it states there is a problem with sparks plugs, plays around and the lights are off.

and the car was now ready.

Now i'm saying i don't mind paying for the parts which came to around 拢100.. and labour 拢180..

but the 2x sensors at 拢151 (which may not have been needed, i will be happy with the old ones put back in if they still work) and the 拢215 eletrical test which wasnt needed as eletrics were fine.. i'm not sure if i really wanna pay for them.

    what are your views.

Timing Chain Question - The Bill?
The number of stupid things are mistakes in this story are so great I don't even know where to begin pointing out what all is wrong here. But the biggest thing is the mechanic. Yes, you did tell him it was a sensor, but my theory is that the people bringing the vehicle in are bringing it in because they don't know how to fix vehicles. I NEVER listen to a customer when he or she says %26quot;Its probably this%26quot;. Now, if a customer comes in and states specifically that he or she just wants something done or a certain thing replaced, that's different, I do the work, warranty the parts and my labor, but won't guarantee to fix any problems by doing so. If a customer is bringing in a vehicle and doesn't know whats wrong and says %26quot;Someone told me its this%26quot; I say %26quot;Ok%26quot; and promptly ignore what they say. Its MY job to diagnose and fix this vehicle, and if I have to warranty the work, then I'M gonna find whats wrong with it. Its simple, you diagnose the problem and determine what it will take to fix it. Then you call the customer and inform of what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix. Then they either pay what it takes to fix it, or they say %26quot;No thanks%26quot; and they pay the diagnostic charge ( usually about $60-$80).

And to be honest, any technician worth their pay would have been able to tell you the timing chain was broken the first time the turned the engine over. When that belt breaks, it lessens the load that the starter has to turn because now the starter is ONLY turning the Crank, connecting rods, and pistons, and some of your cylinders are still going to have valves open, so much less compression to work against. There is a noticeable difference in how the starter sounds and how quick and easy it turns the engine over. This is the biggest give away that the timing chain or belt is broken.

Sorry, you got screwed. I'm not sure about the laws concerning this on your side of the puddle, but if i had to guess, they may be little or nothing you can do. Argue the point with the shop, but remain calm and polite while doing so. Simply inform them that you don't feel you should pay for the work that was done that did not fix the vehicle for the problem you brought it in for. Good Luck
Timing Chain Question - The Bill?
well originaly %26quot;you%26quot; told him it was a sensor. pretty much you just told him to do something, and he did now it wasnt the problem, so he charged you. if you would have told him the car wont start then he would have looked into it and not just go on what you said. sorry but you did kind of did get screwed on this one but hey thats what happens. dont tell them what to do next time just tell em it wont start.
where the hell do you find these mechanics??

Do you live in an area that is more or less devoid of human habitiation and have to settle for less ???

The breakdown people dont know what the hell they are talking about so they should have just kept thier mouths shut.

And the mechanic does not test anything. He just changes parts and hopes for the best.

All this time you are sitting there shelling out your hard earned money.
Your man should really have checked a bit better before going for expensive parts.

But and it's a huge but you are sooooooo damn lucky.

Normally if something like a timing chain lets go then things start saying hello to each other inside the engine. Things like bent valves, wrecked pistons and smashed camshafts are not uncommon.

Put another way you are lucky the engine did not lunch itself completely and you might be putting a 1 or even a 2 in front of your 650 pounds.

Viewed that way you might have had a lucky escape!!
Wholly Cow! That's $1,224 of our unstable dollars! As we say in the US: The price of owning off-shore cars that are supposed to be so special!
A few thoughts on this one.

First, a properly trained tech would have done a thorough diagnosis and come up with the timing chain failure first.

Second, It is possible that in the course of failure of the chain, the cam or crank sensors may have been damaged.

Third, it's a BMW. Repairs can be costly on BMW. Did you get a full breakdown of the hours billed for the repair operations done.

    Toyota 22R timing cover removal?

Do you have to remove the head and oil pan to get the front cover off this engine? The repair manual says to remove them both. I took my '86 pickup to a shop yesterday and they charged me 9.5 hrs to change the timing chain, gears, guides and tensioner. The 9.5 hrs quoted includes time for removing the head per Mitchell's, but I don't think that they actually removed it. I know they did not remove the oil pan because they told me they didn't. I just want to know if I have a case for a partial refund or if it is impossible to skip taking off the head.
    Toyota 22R timing cover removal?
You can skip taking off the head but you will have to loosen the oil pan. I've done this job numerous times and if you loosen the pan a little the cover will come right out. And the whole job without removing the head or oil pan should only tak 5 hours max.
    Toyota 22R timing cover removal?
www.haynes.com, takes about 7hrs if your good. Dont have to take the head off.
    in this case.....

you had agree, on the terms and conditions.

that is a common mistake ,from the machanic's patrons, after the mecanics repairs has been perfomed ,it sound soooo easy to do,that doesn't count the 20K dollars in the tool box and the to many years of experience.(when the task is made by a experience fellow, looks easy.but if You try then You realize that every simple thing it take a week)

I am sorry ,to sound rude,I only want to offer an explanation.

bye the way,22R engine is the best Toyota had ever build

the tining belt is metal chain .so ,You don't have to change it ever, unless is broken.(when is broken or deffective it sound ratteling and the engine shake)..... that every 75k milles does not apply to this engine)
%26gt; I just want to know if I have a case for a partial refund or if it is impossible to skip taking off the head.

    Your joking, right? LOL

    - Is this the first vehicle you ever owned?

    - Does the vehicle run fine after they worked on it?

    - How long would it take you to do it yourself?

    - Do they warranty their work?

    - Is this vehicle older than you are (or pretty close)?

    - Have you priced a vehicle in this century lately?

Good grief, you're lucky you found someone to work on something that old.

Did you do the math, was it even cost effective to maintain something this old (or continue to maintain it), especially if you have to take to a shop (%26quot;Guber's garage%26quot;). Save your pennies, and look at something that's not being held together with tape and bailing wire.

Call into %26quot;Car Talk%26quot;, and ask them. Thank you, I needed this laugh to start my day! LOL

    http://www.cartalk.com/
I believe they will win if the book says that much time, but if I remember right, you don't need to take off the head and pan.
You can change the cover without removing the head, but I highly recommend taking the oil pan off. It is very common for the plastic timing chain guides to break and fall into the oil pan. They could block the oil pickup if left in there and starve the engine of oil.

Timing chain/belt on a Chevy Aveo?

Can anyone inform me if its true this car has a belt which would normally be a chain and that it is suppose to be changed so many thousand miles? What can anyone tell me about this? Thinking of buying one of these cars but this issue worries me. Any other issues anyone has found out on these cars?

    Thanks
Timing chain/belt on a Chevy Aveo?
Either it's designed to have a timing belt or a timing chain. Timing belt--BAD. Timing chain--GOOD. It's not that belts are evil, just that they do break after about 50 or 60k miles where a chain would last longer.

The difference could be the model and using a different engine. You'll need to check what engine you have and call a parts store or look it up online as to whether that model and engine requires a belt or a chain.

If it's a belt, it needs to be changed at the recommended times otherwise you'll be replacing a lot more in the engine than the belt.
Timing chain/belt on a Chevy Aveo?
yes you will void the warreny if you do not have the belt change at 60000 miles if you have a extended warrenty.

Normally a belt needs to be change at that time frame.

Some motors can take a belt breakage, others will cause a lot of damage if you lose a belt.

In the case of the aveo, you do not want to break a belt, and the motor will be damaged.

I have a aveo, all I have had to do it change the oil and rototate the tires.

I plan on changing the belt at 60000.

    Good luck.
Don't forget......you can't get parts for a Daewoo car, now. Everything is discontinued. We couldn't even get a flasher for one of our customers.

If you must drive GM, stick with something that does not have a new name, and has been use for at least 5 yrs. (the name, that is)

I recommend Honda, Toyota or Subaru. And if you say you are buying american......just look on the valve covers of alot of GM vehicles (the SUV engines say %26quot;china%26quot; on them). So the %26quot;buy american%26quot; arguement is moot. Someday, american CEOs will learn their lesson......but not today.
Yeah, it's a belt. The car is made by Daewoo which had millions of cars with failing belts when Daewoos were sold in the US. The belts were breaking around 80-90k miles. So there's the track record, you like replacing T belts?

Do I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?

I was just told that I need a timing chain for my 2004 Chevy Cavalier. I took it to the shop because it started jumping and shutting off when I slowed down or stopped at a light and eventually cut off though it would come back on. It would drive smoothly when I drove at a higher speed. Also, a very loud smell was coming out of the exhaust. I took it to the shop and he put it on the computer and it read rapid misfire so he advised me to replace the ignition coil. I did, but nothing changed afterwards and when I drove it home and tried to crank it up the next morning it wouldn't start. Now the mechanic is saying I need to replace the timing chain. He was wrong about putting the ignition coil on there, I don't know if he's wrong about the timing chain. This is getting pretty expensive. Can anyone give me some advice? If it is the timing chain how much will it cost to repair?
Do I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?
timing chains on 2.2 engines usually make noise before they go south, and when they do, its a done deal. the engine stops. most times they break, get jammed with broken pieces, and the engine locks up... until repaired. you need a second professional oppinion. the 2.2 has a history of bad timing chains,(the chain tensioner falls apart) does it sound NORMAL when you try to start it? spin too fast, make noise???
Do I need to replace this timing chain on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Engine?
I'd check the owner's manual to see what is says about timing chains. And take the vehicle to a Chevy dealer for a second opinion.
so your car has a loud smell lol, it sounds like a timing problem all right, I've never heard of a rapid misfire but you may want to take it to auto zone and have them check it to make sure they check the COMPUTER for free
Unless you have over 300,000 miles on the vehicle I fail to see how your timing chain would factor in to this issue.

    Air filter clean?

    Plugs good?

    Ignition wires in good shape?

No trouble codes or check engine light?

Sounds like a 4 year old car needs a bit of TLC, but a timing chain?

Start with the basics required for the engine to run smoothly first.
u might look at the crankshaft position sensor.i have an 01 and it was acting really funky,i was puzzled as hell.i got a code reader and it ended up being the tps,in my mind it was totally unrelated to the problem but i changed it anyway and it ran fine ever since.get a second opinion,if ur check engine light is on,go to auto zone, get a free code scan.i don't think it's the timing chain.

Does a 2005 peugeot 407 1.6 HDi diesel have a timing belt or chain?
the guy who says modern cars use timing chains is wrong ! Timing belts took over from chains many years ago, You need to have your belt changed about 80000 miles,, do not wait till 100000!
Does a 2005 peugeot 407 1.6 HDi diesel have a timing belt or chain?
your best bet would be to dig into the car, thats always the best way to find anything out on a vehicle, but its a fairly new car , high chances are your running a chain , timing belts are hardly found on new cars... but you definitely wanna get in there to find out, chains at some point in time in the over 100k mile mark its when you would wanna start paying attention, chains tend to stretch or jump timing at this point is when you would wanna replace it.
being a diesel engine, it probably has neither it is more than likely gear to gear. The reason is vthat diesle engines has a lot more initial load torque and would probably snap a chain and definitely chew up a belt. I would find another mechanic, if he doesnt know.

  • Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?

Hello guys, I'm a proud owner of a Jeep Cherokee 1997, 6 cylinders, 4.0L, 2 doors. When I bought my %26quot;loyal friend%26quot; from a senior from Denver, Co, it used to had 117,000 on it,, now It's been 4 years since I bought it and I put a lot of miles on my Jeep. Now it has 158,528 miles and is still working good. I recently change the battery, the alternator and the radiator, this last one I had to do it because the antifreeze was leaking and I didn't realize about it until I got to Vegas. I drove it from Twin Falls, Id, all the way down to Sin City and I didn't realize about this problem. How dumb I was!!! Well the thing is that ultimately I'm driving my Jeep in long trips. I drove it to Seattle, WA, Las Vegas, NV, Boise, ID, Salt Lake City, UT, and I'm really concerned about the timing chain. I've heard that if the timing chain fails, my %26quot;loyal friend%26quot;, will die for sure. And the costs for repairs are expensive so I wanna have it replace it before it'll be too late. Today I went to Shucks Auto Parts and they told me that I don't need to replace my timing chain, since is timing chain and chain is much stronger than timing belt and plus last longer. I wanted hear a second opinion and I went to AutoZone, and they told me that yes, I need to have replaced the timing chain. Now I don't know who says the truth, cause the problem is not the timing chain price (it's just 49 bucks), the thing is, how much a good and HONEST car mechanic could charge me for replacing it?...So I need your opinion guys if I need to replace my timing chain or not if so, how much I have to expect for paying?..and one more question. By doing the replacement of timing chain, Do I have to replace the water pump also?...It's not leaking but since I'm driving my car long trips, I wanna take my precautions. Thank you, I hope you guys could help me

    P.D.: JEEP ROCKS!!!
Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?
The timing BELT should be replaced every 75,000 miles. I have to assume the previous owner did so at the correct interval. AT 150K+ miles, you're due. If you do, in fact, have a timing CHAIN on a 1997 Jeep 4.0L, it would not need replacement based on mileage alone, but on wear. If you do replace the chain, replace the cam and crank gears also as a complete 3-piece set. Since you have to remove the water pump to get at the timing assembly, it's your call if you want to replace it. It should not be any additional labor, about 2 hours total.

If you just replace the water pump, you can pull the timing cover at that time and see first hand if you have a belt or a chain.

If you have a set of tools and a little mechanical know-how, this is a good afternoon project for the novice mechanic. You will get to know your car better and wil be able to understand why repair shops cost so much.
Do you guys think I need to replace my timing chain? Jeep Cherokee 1997?
yes I think you should replace it..
TIME TO CHANGE DAT WHOLE WHIP !!!MAN UPGRADE DAT OL CLUNKER!!
No, you don't need to change it. I had the same thinking along time ago with the same 4.0L. I needed to change to water pump and thought of changing the time chain. I open it up and it was still tight. It's still good because of it being a short chain and a double roller.

If you have no problem with now, it'll be fine. Chain will stretch before it'll break. That stretching will cause the timing to be off and that's when you'll know it needs to change. I had 222k before selling the jeep and it was still running great.

Does a 2002 Hyundai coupe S have a timing belt or chain and how often does it need to be changed?

It does have a belt, but if you start it in colder weather a lot that can shorten the life of the belt a lot, and so can a heavy off and on foot (hot rod) shorten the life. I see a lot here in alaska go out at 30 to 40 thousand miles because of it.
Does a 2002 Hyundai coupe S have a timing belt or chain and how often does it need to be changed?
It's a belt, typically belts at least by 60,000 miles or first signs of cracks and wear.

Timing Chain On 95 Mitsubishi Magna?

I own a 1995 Mitsubishi Magna 4cyl auto, I have the head pulled off the engine to change the head gaskets and generally clean everything up. Only problem is that while we were pulling off the head, someone dropped a small bolt down there, after hours of trying to find it (poking round with a long screwdriver, magnets etc) we couldn't see it or feel it anymore so decided to put the engine back together and see if it would crank slowly by hand to see if the bolt fell through to the sump.

Now here is where im stuck, the timing chain and its top cog won't lift back up high enough to put the bolt with the distributor gearing back in, it's only out by about 5mm so im thinking of 2 things. 1 The bolt is wedged in there somewhere and stopping the chain coming up or 2 The chain has come off its bottom cog and is out of place.

This is about the limit of my %26quot;mechanical skill%26quot; so any ideas would be appreciated, all i can think of is to pull the sump off and see of i can get to the bolt in there and/or put the timing chain back on the bottom cog.

    cheers in advance

I'd find a mechanic at a Mitsubishi dealer or independent shop that's done many engine head repairs. Even if you have to pay him to give you some tips, it would be well worth it.

MASTER TECHS -- Have any of you dealt with 4.0 timing chain replacement?

97 Explorer 4.0l V6 sohc 4x4. Bought it cheep for a parts truck but it looks better than mine. Has 57,000 miles on the truck. (I know it doesn't sound right but I know the owner and it's right) The crank turns over without any restriction, and I haven't taken the valve covers off yet to see if the cams are turning. I know that you have to pull the engine to change all 4 chains. Any comments you give about your experience with this will help me decide what I will eventually do. Thanks in advance.

    CORSA timing chain.?

I WAS GETTING A TICKING NOISE FROM THE ENGIN, I'VE BEEN TOLD BY A VAUXHALL ENGINEER THAT MY CORSA NEEDS A TIMING CHAIN REPLACED ASAP BEFORE DAMAGING THE ENGINE(IF SNAPS). I TOOK IT TO A DIFFRENT GARAGE AND THEY SAID I NEED TO CHANGE THE TENSIONER AS WELL!! IS THAT RIGHT? IM CONFUSED
    CORSA timing chain.?
I own a shop, and have a degree in engineering. The tensioner is designed to keep the slop out of the chain, so the engine timing will be more accurate even though the chain may be worn out. The tensioner has a bearing that is closed, and can't be greased. The heat makes the grease dry up, and this is why they say change it too. I will agree, to do the job correctly, the tensioner ought to be changed too. It will also depends on the design of your tensioner. Some just has a wear strip, and it wears out along with the chain.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
    CORSA timing chain.?
they are right you always change the tensoner with the chain and gears in any engine, they make a kit now that comes with all of the parts you need to do this job with, and its cheaper than just buying a new chain and gears, but always replace all of it at one time, because all of this wears out at the same time usually, good luck with it.

  • 1993 Ford aerostar won't start what could be the problem?

I have changed the timing chain, fuel pump, ignition module, computer, distributor, spark plugs. Engine cranks over good but still won't start. It is gettin g bright blue spark, has fuel pressure of 37 psi. still will not start or even attempt to start. I have done everything I know and it just won 't start. I would like to get this thing running without having to take it to a garage to get it fixed
1993 Ford aerostar won't start what could be the problem?
find the fuel cut off switch, reset ,its in the left rear wheel well by the back door if this dont work you have problems with the cat, take to dealer
1993 Ford aerostar won't start what could be the problem?
If it has spark, try spraying some wd-40 in the throttle body and see it if tries to start, or starts then stalls. If it does, even though you have fuel pressure, the injectors are not pulsing. Check for 12 volts at the injectors, and you have that, look for a ground pulse on the other side of the plug. if you are getting no ground pulse, you may have a bad crankshaft position sensor, or possibly a bad pcm. If it does not try to start after spraying the wd-40 into the throttle body, you need to check the compression. Good luck!

Coolant Leak at Timing Chain Cover?

My brother has a 2002 Ford Ranger. He's been having problems with it and took it to the dealer, and they said it has a coolant leak at the timing chain cover. The job would be $1500 because they want to replace everything around the timing chain cover as well. My friend who's a mechanic can change it for me for cheap. My question is, how much is a timing chain cover? I looked and found one website that said $180, another said $20 so im not sure. And about how many hours of labor would it take? If anyone could provide me with a link that would be great, thanks.
Coolant Leak at Timing Chain Cover?
First tell your brother that he may have a cracked block inside the cover which could cause the coolant to leak out. There should not be anything but oil inside the cover. Have him check the oil sump for any sign of emulsification. Fifteen hundred clams is a little too stiff. The cover don't need replacing, the gasket does. Before getting the work done make sure you find out where the leak is coming from. A pressure test may help. If any section of the block inside the cover is cracked, you got yourself a serious problem there.
Coolant Leak at Timing Chain Cover?
Unless the Cover is Cracked or Damaged it can be reused. To do it right you need Timing Cover Gasket, Water Pump, Timing Belt/Chain, Tension Pulley, Coolant, {Thermostat if it's been Running Hot}, Anti-Seize or Gasket Seal and about 6 to 8 Hours. Dealer told you $1,500 Sounds good, I have shops where you can get everything done for $1,100.
First you need to pinpoint the leak.

You do that by attaching a cooling system pressure testor, which is basically a pump that attached where the radiator cap goes.

You can keep pumping above normal until you find the leak (make sure you have it filled with water, because you won't see it it there is air at the leak.)

You can do this with the cam cover off, so should be able to see the chain and around the chain cover.

(What I fear is that it may be the head gasket, and not anything to do with chain cover at all.)

But a chain cover is not that hard to do.

The hardest part is you need to take the harmonic damper off, and it has a large nut on the end of the crank. (Check if yours is reverse thread as well.)

Finally, I had an odd case with a Mazda engine, where the very front of the head was not one piece with the head. And it had a gasket and cooling passages to it. It looked like the head gasket was bad, but taking the cam sprocket and front of head off, and replacing the gasket, fixed it perfectly.

But this was very odd. I only mention it because you have to be open to all possibilities these days.

The whole job should be less then $700, and don't take it to the dealer. They want to sell cars, not fix them.

    99 chevy lumina-timing chain issues?

had the intake gaskets changed drove it app 400 miles-no warning-it sounded like it through a rod-or lost its timing chain.it will try to start, but acts like its not in time-and bogs down quick, probably killed some valves also-is it worth paying money to fix?-or is it too much for a car that has over 200.000.car ran great, best car i ever owned.great on gas too,so plz give fair honest answers///
    99 chevy lumina-timing chain issues?
You would need to find out what the problem(s) is/are before making the decision as to whether to repair or not; it may be better and less expensive to have a rebuilt engine installed
    99 chevy lumina-timing chain issues?
if a rod change the car. if not you can fix it.
you might get lucky and didnt hurt any valves. check with a good mechanic and see if the timing/belt jumped.
It all depends on you. How much to you like this car? How long do you want to keep it if it runs? How much is it worth to YOU?

If the chain broke, there is a possibility that some valve got bent in the process. If so, you could be looking at $1500.00 to do the heads and replace the timing chain. If you are a DIYer you could probably do it for half that.

Your best bet would be to call around to local shops, tell them what happened and ask for estimates.

Hope this helps and good luck.
I'm going to guess that the camshaft jumped a few teeth on the timing chain. You might have bent few valves. If so, it probably isn't worth the money to fix. Sorry
If you had coolant enter the oil system from the intake gasket failure, it is possible that the cam bearings were damaged leading to a broken camshaft. Depending on where the cam broke, would determine how many cylinders you have that still run. If you lost oil pressure when the failure occurred, that reinforces the broken cam idea, since the oil pump is driven from the aft end of the cam. The 3100's were known for intake failures and resulting broken cams seemed more common than thain problems. Certainly, I would not rule out a chain. I might consider removing the forward valve cover and observing the operation of all the valves, especially the aft valves.

If the cam is broken, the engine needs to come out of the car and repairs would likely exceed the value of the car.

Why does my bike chain keep derailing when I drop off the curb on my bike is there an adjustment I could make.

I have had the bike for about 3 years but until now I havent been riding it everyday. The chain will derail and fall onto the frame next to the pedal and doesnt jump back on. Also when I am pedaling sometimes the chain jumps (the pedal moves but the chain skips a tooth or slips out of one and catches the next). I haven't changed the chain yet as I haven't ridden thousands of miles which I believe is around the time to change. Could you please point me in the direction of the problem?
Why does my bike chain keep derailing when I drop off the curb on my bike is there an adjustment I could make.
Without knowing what kind of bike you're talking about it's hard to say. A single speed and multi-speed bike would have different reasons for this happening.
Why does my bike chain keep derailing when I drop off the curb on my bike is there an adjustment I could make.
loosen the back tires bolt... pull your back tire back and tighten the bolt
I am assuming that you have a multispeed bike. The problem can be caused by one of two things, and maybe both. Problem one is that the limit screws on the derailleurs are wrong. These control how far in one direction or the other that the chain can be pushed. The second problem is that over the time you have had the bike, the cables have stretched. This would cause the derailleurs to lose control of the chain. I would guess that it is both problems.

Take you bike to you local bike shop, and have them do a tune up. It should cost about $40, and will fix the problem.

  • Bad/Worn Timing Chain - 350 Small Block Chevy?

1972 Chevelle 350. With my car, I have been asking questions like everyday because my car won't start. I have been working on cars a while and know the five major things a car has to have in order to start. I know those are power, fuel, spark, compression and proper timing. Anyway, when I got the car, it was a project car. A friend and I have been replacing parts left and right and then, we thought we were finished but not quite yet. When everything was connected, we tried to start if for the first time. After using starting fluid, it started but stalled right away. So we then looked at the clues. We saw chocolate milkish oil, white smoke out of the exhaust, losing coolant in radiator and all that. So, took off the heads, replaced the gaskets with new gaskets, new bolts and intsalled the heads back on after having them checked. They checked out ok. We torqued them correctly and in the right sequence and we did the same for the Intake Manifold. After triple checking the valves, we went to start it. Would get really close but nothing. So we double checked the distributor timing. Aligned it at TDC (not 180 degrees off) and set the plugs and wire in the correct order (18436572 clockwise). Did that and still nothing. Hmm... Well, we had a mechanic come over and when I was turning the car over, he gave it full throttle and gave it some gas directly in there. It backfired badly! Flames shot out. Hmm... Well anyway, we checked the following: Is it getting fuel (fresh fuel, new fuel pump, new fuel filter and lines). Got that. Then looked at carb. It is pumping and everything seems ok. Then. checked spark. Good. After that, everything checked out. The power is fine, the timing is correct (moved the distributor clockwise and counter when turning car over to see if that helped. Nothing really. It sounds best where it is). So after that, we are so stumped. It sounds really close but just won't go over the hill and go vroooooom and then idle. If we use starting fluid, it'll start but then stall right away. Well after that, we are so confused. We checked compression. Number 1, and 2 are 3 are pretty high (140ish). The rest, around 90. Nothing too high. However, we checked to be sure the rings are still good (wet test), and they check out ok and the heads are fine and the valves are adjusted properly. Everything seems fine. Sometimes, you can hear a pop sound when turning over. Nothing too big but sometimes. Anyway, after that, I'm stumped. I even added some addictive that is supposed to bump up compression and reduce blowby. Did that and still doesn't really help.

After doing all this, something is weird. My thinking is that the timing chain is worn or jumped. It is original from 1972. Has not been changed but the car has not been driven in over 10 years. Not even starting - project. When we changed the heads, we turned it by hand and the cylinders look fine and no holes in pistons or anything.

The car itself has only 47K original miles. But, we messed up timing once (distributor - 180 degrees off) and it backfired badly. I heard that could make the chain jump or something. That is the only thing I could think of. What are the symptons of a worn timing chain or one that jumped or anything like that? Had this motor basically apart. This is the one thing we haven't checked out yet. Let me know what you think. I have a timing chain (new for this car) sitting in my bedroom. You think I should redo that and install the new one and then readjust the valves and all that after it has been installed? Thanks

Sounds like you did everything right.

Id say yes, try the timing chain.

    Then check everything else again.

    Good luck!

Bad/Worn Timing Chain - 350 Small Block Chevy?
if u have ****** up timing chain buy a new one and put it on there but dude i hope your chvelle flys peace i didnt feel like reading it all b cuz i kept getting interrupted
it might be when you had the distributor out, you did,nt get it back in right, maybe a tooth or 2 off. take number 1 plug out, stick you finger in the hole and have someone bump the starter until the piston pushes you finger away, then turn the crank to top dead center and drop the distributor back in. if it won,t drop in, take a long screwdriver and turn the oil pump.
It does sound like a timing chain problem to me. If you already have a new one, install it. It's good insurance anyway.

One last thing to check before you do this - the gas in the tank. You could have a tank full of bad gas. The clue is that it starts on starting fluid, but not gasoline.
I think it has to be in the distributor are you sure of those timing marks it will back fire and try to run on some cylinders if it is 180 out the timing chain should be done but unlikely causing the concern, check that timing

Why my 1988 Buick Lesabre does not want to stay running?

I have changed the timing chain, harmonic balancer, crank gear sensor, and I don't know where else to look. I had it checked out and the timing is set right and the balancer was put on right. What else could it be? It started cold no problem but I drove it for about a mile and it started backfiring and would not accelerate. Finally it died, and would not start again it turns over but will not stay running.
Why my 1988 Buick Lesabre does not want to stay running?
what you can do it check the MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR if it has not been replaced since 1988 that is 65% chance that is the problem. MASS AIR flow sensor is the sensor that is connected to your air filter i would say replace it because that is what feeds oxygen to your fire(the engine) no Oxygen no fire understand??

check the fuel line battery and engine if its none of those it might be time to retire ur buick srry if it turns out thats wat it is

Does a 96 Ford Taurus have a timing chain or belt? If it's a belt, when are you supposed to change it?

It's a chain and unless it breaks leave it alone, unless it's a SHO then it's a belt then change it around 90K
Does a 96 Ford Taurus have a timing chain or belt? If it's a belt, when are you supposed to change it?
Chain, depends on what type of engine it has.
Does a 96 Ford Taurus have a timing chain or belt? If it's a belt, when are you supposed to change it?
when it breaks or starts shredding
They all have a timing chain and they are not fun on these cars to do. Some even require removal of the engine to get the chain out, This is a Ford trait that I had on my Windstar as well.
The engine 3.0L has a chain, which never goes out so don't worry about it. If it would go out you would probably have more than 200,000 miles on it.
I have to disagree with people on here. I recommend having it checked at 100,000 miles and see if it needs to be replaced and about 50,000 miles thereafter.
I don't know about the Yamaha motored SHO vehicles but not too many had the v-8 anyway.

The 3.0 EFI (2v), 3.0 FFV (Flex Fuel 2v), and 3.0 DOHC (4v) all use timing chaines to control timing of the motor. these are good engines for these chaines as I've seen many at 150-200k without it needing changing..... With chaines, the vehicle will run bad but almost never snap the chain....

For get about inspections of it unless you like 4 hour mechanic bills as it's under the front of the motor and requires water pump, oil pump and a few other items to be removed to get to... Better to replace it and forget it if you are worried... But I've driven many at 150-250 k with no issues..occasionally drive one with 100k miles on it..engine is abused by co-workers and others and still going...

Fan belts (shouldn't call it that now..a alternator or FEAD as Ford calls it) needs inspection about every 6-12 k miles (can be easily inspected for cracks when having the oil changed) and changed when it starts to shows cracks, wear or squeals.

You Honda used a timing belt and is called a interference motor.. meaning belt breaks, valves hit pistons... Many import owners don't know about it but learn REALLY QUICK at 60k when the dealer is forcing that $300 required belt maintaince down their throat or the customer ignores it and blows the engine at 100k or so
    gaerbox1 gets my vote !!

    Timing chain on a mustang 2000 v6?
Your car is past the due time for a timing belt replacement, a timing chain and belt runs from the crank to the camshaft in order for the valves to open and close at the proper time. It is not a job for the faint of heart, or a novice mechanic, it requires radiator shroud removal, radiator, fans, alternator, A/C compressor, and loosening the power steering pump, removal of the water pump (replace it while you're in there. Then you remove the balance wheel on the crank (change the oil seal there too) then you are ready to get to the timing belt. If you think it's a job you want to tackle e-mail me or get a carters manual at autozone.
    Timing chain on a mustang 2000 v6?
get your car to a mechanic and let them have a look. Don't try to mess around with the timing yourself.
If you checked the presense of spark at the spark plug, then why are you going to mess with the timing belt/chain. If the timing belt/chain broke you wouldn't be getting spark.
first things first there a difference from a chain and a belt one is made of iron and a belt is made of rubber but both do the same thing another thing is that on fords there is a cold role pine that goes into the distributer drive gear and some time this brakes or false out and your distributer dont turn the road ore any more so you might just like to check that out before you jump in to change out the gears and chain or belt much less expensive to replace the pin and reset the timing of your car and takes less time to do the job but if you are apsalutly sure that the belt or chain is bad by all means get new parts for it dont bother whit used

IM CONFUSED

I would do both at the same time. Tension-er would only cost as much as the part is because they have to get it out of the way to put the chain in anyway.

    Vauxhall CORSA LIFE timing chain.?
    Sounds right to me,

The timing belt/chain needs to be replaced at a regular interval. Depending on the model it could be 40,000 or 60,000 miles. But also if there are signs of wear.

When the belt/chain is replaced it is a good idea to replace the tensioner at the same time. It keeps the belt/chain at the right tension for the engine to run properly. It it should fail it would damage the new belt/chain and it does not cost alot extra.

Try to get a few quotes...

Not tham I am recommending them (As I don't know which one is closest to you) but Nationwide work on a quote rather than estimate basis so the price should not change unless other work is required.

I had the same job done on an old Cavalier and it cost 拢160.

    Good luck !

1993 Nissan Sentra 1.6L DOHC Timing Chain Question?

It has 203000 Miles, runs like new, gets MPG like new, . It has a timing chain not belt, actually has two, an upper and lower. Do i need to change them? I know belts are like 60K or so, but chains?

PS. Nissans are such great cars, wonder why hondas have a better opinion then nissans?
1993 Nissan Sentra 1.6L DOHC Timing Chain Question?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
1993 Nissan Sentra 1.6L DOHC Timing Chain Question?
yes, timing belts need to be changed because when they get old they can break, timing belts need to be changed because when they get old they streach, and the tensioner wears out.
Only if it makes noise or using a timing light you can see it move alot. I wish they would put chains on everything. I won't buy a belt driven camshaft or aluminum engine.
With this many miles, your Nissan is running on borrowed time. Sooner or later you will have trouble with the timing chains, your lucky to have gotten this many miles. When a chain goes it can cause many other problems, such as bent valves. I would replace them to be on the safe side.

  • 1975 Chevy Nova stopped going down road and now won't start? Not timing chain, disbutor or coil? any ideas?thax

My husband keeps saying it is not getting any fire. it won't turn over when you try to crank it. when we were going down the road he had the gas pedal to the floor and it slowed down to a stop and now won't crank at all we were told timing chain but it is fine and he check the distubtor and it was fine and he change the coil and still won't start help please thanks
1975 Chevy Nova stopped going down road and now won't start? Not timing chain, disbutor or coil? any ideas?thax
Ok, there are no points, ignition or condenser in a 1975 Chevy Nova. They had electronice ignition in those distributors as well. The coil or the ignition module may be your culprit here. I would remove the cap and rotor 1st. A sneaky or pesky problem with those older ignition systems back then was a wire that would run to the module. The module bolts onto the ignition plate itself. The wire going to this module runs under the plate where the module would bolt onto. When the vacuum advance would pull the plate to advance the unit it would rub against the wire going into the module and wear away or break this wire. hence you have no spark going to the ignition system. If the wire is good, trplace the module. Also look at the coil under there as well. Remove it and check the bottom of the coil where it makes contact with the spring , if it is blue, then replace this part as well.

Hope this helps, but i know for sure that your problem lies inside your distributor.

Good Luck, and let me know if this was your problem.
1975 Chevy Nova stopped going down road and now won't start? Not timing chain, disbutor or coil? any ideas?thax
The alternator may not be pulling enough amps. I have had a car do the same thing to me.
    alternator
check the points, condenser, ign to coil wire, any loose connections? without seeing it it is pretty hard to diagnose
Fuel, air, compression, spark. That's what an engine needs to run. Check those systems. If it won't turn over when you try to start it, check the battery, starter and solenoid circuits.

Or cut your losses and sell it as is. A 75 is 31 years old after all. But if you want to keep it, tow it to the shop and have it looked at.
Good advise on the electrical side but, from your discription, it sounds like it died over a short period of time. Coil or module failure is like turning off the ignition. Check several sparkplugs to see if they are wet and ground one to the engine with the plug wire attached and crank engine to see if you get a spark. If there is a spark and the plug(s) are dry, it could be a fuel related problem. Filter, bad hose, cracked/rusted line, fuel pump, etc. If plug(s) are dry and there is spark, reinstall plug(s), spray some starting fluid down the carb and try to start. If it fires or runs for 1-2 seconds, definetly a fuel problem. Good luck.

Timing chain noise 96 nissan hardbody 2.4L?

I have a nissan hardbody 2.4l and have a metallic noise for about 3 seconds on startup after sitting for 10 minutes or longer. Had the chain sprocket and tentioner changed and the noise started after about 3000 miles. Any ideas or similar problems? Thanks, Markiev
Timing chain noise 96 nissan hardbody 2.4L?
My experience with this is that its the either the upper or lower chain guards. My friends KA24DE had a similar noise. We removed the valve cover, then the upper timing chain cover. The guard had actually sheered off and was just sitting on top of the chain. I can only guess that the upper cover acted as an obstruction and kept it in place. If it have fallend down it likely would have caused serious damage after jamming the timing chain.

It could be something else but this is easy enough to check that its worth the time.
Timing chain noise 96 nissan hardbody 2.4L?
I am assuming that the noise goes away once the engine get oil pressure? You could take it to your mechanic that installed it, and ask them to check it out.

Or you could just let it go. I believe it's just a little slack or lack of oil until pessure builds.

Does a 2000 golf need to have its timing belt changed?

i keep getting conflicting answers on this question. does it have a timing belt or a timing chain? how expensive is it to fix? at what mileage should it be changed (if it does need to be changed)?
Does a 2000 golf need to have its timing belt changed?
Depending on the engine, will depend on whether you have a belt or a chain. Belts on average should be replaced between 75,000 to 100,000 miles (to play it safe) While a chain normally can go 100,000 to 150,000 miles (as long as the engine is not raced). Now the replacement of belt or chain can be a little expensive. Also again, it will depend on which engine you have. You can simply go to your dealership, and ask for a quote on such a repair, and for any related items for repair during that time.

    Good luck.

I believe it has a timing belt and a good rule is to change it at about 60-75 thousand miles. It should cost about 200-300 dollars however its a vw so it could be more since its german

  • Timing belt or chain.?

I have a 99 Grand cherokee. I am not sure if it has a timing chain or a belt. Is it easy to change and how do I do it please?
    Timing belt or chain.?
For the record its a timing chain.

If you're thinking about belt replacement you probably mean the serpentine belt. It turns accessory drive (starter, alternator etc). These can be replaced in your driveway with the proper tools, if your timing chain is bad you should take it to a shop like the others have suggested.
    Timing belt or chain.?
You take it to a garage and ask them to do it. If you don't even know if it's a belt or a chain, you really shouldn't be playing with it.
Unless you are good with cars, get a professional to fix it. You have to remove the water pump, as well as several other major parts. You will also have to set the timing, set the tensioner, reseal the water pump, and put everything else back on.
It should be a belt. but i would get it changed by a mechanic. you need the right size belt plus it needs to be tightly put on there or it would slip
You have a chain. Why would you change it? They, with oil changes, should last as long as the engine,,Yes, they will stretch, but unless you have so much wear that it is hitting your cover, you will not know it is there.

IF..and I say IF.. you are competent with mechanic work, and you have the four liter.....SHORT VERSION. Pull the fan and clutch, shroud, water pump...you CANNOT RESEAL THIS AS SUGGESTED,,but good time to change it any way, pull the serpentine belt ,using a puller, pull the crank harmonic dampener, pull the timing cover off, note the marks on the crank sproket and cam sprocket and line up NOW. Pull the center bolt holding the cam sprocket and slide the two sprokets off together. You WERE planning on replacing the two sprockets too, weren't you?? DO it as a set or chain wear will be accerlerated. Clean all gasket material off and lossen the first12 bolts of the oil pan..If you damage the gasket on the oil pan, you will have to pull it too and replace the gasket..be careful. Line up the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets and slide, with the chain, back into place.

Oil the chain with 30 w engine oil and reverse the above procedure..Note, use a harmonic INSTALLER, never the bolt on the crank to pull it on..Yes, it MIGHT work, but damage the crank threads....DON't even think of it..These pullers and installers can be borrowed from larger auto stores.

If you are NOT useing cork gaskets,,you can use RTV sealer on the various gaskets.

This is the SHORT version, but gives you and idea how to do. Time,,depending upon Murphey's Law around four hours..If you have to pull the pan..add two more hours..minimum.

    Good Luck,
Timing Chain. Goto your parts store and pickup a repair manual. It does require removing most of the accessories on the front of the engine including the fan assembly.

How often do change the power chain on brace?

How often do you have the power chain change on brace to be tighten? my ortho say that the power chain change around 3 or 4 time, depend on the teeth. how many do you have your change before taking it off? I don't have power chain on top but the bottom is 2nd time and will change the power chain for 3rd and my dentist think it will be last on bottom but top will wait till my adult tooth come out.
How often do change the power chain on brace?
I didn't have one on the bottom, but my top one had to be changed three times.

    Everybody is different.

    :)
How often do change the power chain on brace?
This question isn't very clear...are you in pain? Power chain closes spaces and is often one of the last steps, and sometimes pc is left on till the braces are taken off to ensure you don't get spaces again. It will be changed every visit until your braces come off.

I have 96 nissan primera LX. use timing belt or chain? mileage before I should change belt/chain??
    Timing belt, 60,000 miles
i own a repair shop, and I'm not real sure on this one what it has,i have never had one of those in to work on,but if its a chain,it needs to be changed every 100 thousand,a belt has to changed every 60 thousand miles, the chain will last longer than that but it will rattle ,and i think it does have a chain and gears in it, a belt though wont give any warning at all it just breaks and that's it ,one way to tell if you have a belt or a chain, you,ll have a plastic cover its a belt that covers it,if its a chain it will have a metal cover, good luck,i hope this help,s.

How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?

I recently had a friend fix an oil leak on my '98 Nissan Sentra. The leak affected the timing chain, which splattered oil all over parts of the engine and alternator. He did a great job cleaning it up, but now my car seems too slow when it changes gears and I have to almost slam on the gas to make it go. Could working with the timing chain affect the way my transmission works or could this problem have been caused by anything to do with the timing chain?
How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?
If your car is not in the correct time, it will not perform correctly. I am quite sure your transmission has nothing to do with the problem. But if he took the timing chain off, and put it back in close to original, but not quite there, it will run very poorly. You need to take it to a garage, and let them test out the timing.
How did my mechanic affect my transmission/timing belt?
Might I suggest goint to a REAL mechanic next time?
The timing belt has nothing to do with the transmission. However, the problem you are discribing, having no power, can be attributed to mistiming. So, if your friend took the timing chain off and put it back on wrong then yeah, that is probably it. Get it into a shop to have the timing checked.

Also, if this is a interfernce motor, which if it is a four-banger than it probably is, you want to be really careful. If the timing so too far off you will destroy your motor.
your friend probably didn't set the timing correctly, if you didn't have a trans problem before he worked on the motor, i doubt its that. got to take the timing apart again. pain in the a........
Try throwing some tranny fluid in it, if not have a real mechanic check it out not your friend.
Use a real mechanic, not your friends to take care of your car problems. You wouldn't have a friend operate on you, would you?
well they did it cause they played u brother go to another mechanic and see
He probally put the timing belt on incorrect may be 1 tooth off or so on the timing belt sprockets

How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango?

How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump and on a 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9 4 wd with 109k.miles? Should I change the timing chain? If you can please give me a estimated Thank You!

I getting tired of old Vechiles LOL
How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango?
The cheapo water pump from oreillys is $46, the higher end one is around $70. As far as labor, Mitchell OnDemand calls for 2 hours flag rate time to change it out. You'll probably be looking at at least 1 gallon of antifreeze as well for what will be lost changing it out, and I would recommend changing the thermostat when you change the water pump. The 5.9 uses a timing chain, which I wouldnt recommend replacing, seeing as the vehicle has that low of miles on it. I'm not sure how much labor costs in your area, but the shop I work at charges $75 per flag rate hour. So if we were to do it, taxes and everything it would be right around $250. If you live in a big city, you'll probably be expecting to pay around $100 a hour for labor at a reputable shop. Good luck and hope this helps.
How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango?
I do not know where you live, your best bet would be to find a reputable garage in your area and get an estimate from them. Most will give you a rough idea of what you are looking at.

I would not go to a Dealership, you would have to get a loan for a dealer to do the same job.

A friend of mine that has a 2006 Ford F-150 was given a quote of $1200 to do a tune up from a Ford Dealer, I sent him to the garage that does the work on all of my vehicles, he did everything the Dealership was going to do and charged him $300. So, shop around and see what kind of price you can get, see if you can find anything out about the garage about what kind of work they do, will they stand behind there work or not.
it can cost alot($900 +) to have someone do it.i would recommend doing it yourself if you know a little about cars. you have to remove the fan shroud and the radiator to get to the water pump. it isnt very hard, but can take a while.

you probably dont need to replace the timing chain unless you can hear it or know its going bad, as long as you change your oil regularly then you should be good.
i wouldn't change the timing chain and gears in it not unless its over 150 thousand,on the labor and parts for all that it only cost about 600 bucks to get all that done and that's with parts and labor, its not that expensive on a 5.9, good luck.

    Vectra engine-- timing chain?

hiya, my timing chain has snapped on my 2.2 vectra- would a differant size engine go straight in without having to change anything? as its the 2nd time its snaped and not cheap to get them fixed.
    Vectra engine-- timing chain?
Gearbox would be wrong if the engine size was changed
    Vectra engine-- timing chain?
timing chains very rarely snap. you had a timing belt. big difference.

what is a vectra anyway? and whatever you do, do not take your vehicle back to the mechanic who did your first timing belt replacement - if he would have done it correctly, it would not have snapped. please trust me on this
as the other guy says its a belt, if it snaps it has been fitted wrongly timing chains don't snap

02 Reg 1L Vauxhall Corsa Club,58,000 mileage - Timing Belt change?

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could advise me on when the timing belt needs changing on this model of car? Is it a chain timing belt and if so should it be changed after a certain milage or age?

    Thanks
02 Reg 1L Vauxhall Corsa Club,58,000 mileage - Timing Belt change?
The timing belt in a Corsa is not a belt at all and is known as a timing chain as it is a chain and not a belt (funny enough!). I drive an 01 Reg 1.2L Vauxhall Corsa with 102,000 miles on the clock and the chain hasn't been changed once. As far as I'm aware the chain is supposed to last the life of your engine. Although like most mechanical things wear and tear can sometimes play their part. But for the majority of owners they will never need to change their timing belt. Also heres a tip that might save you money. If your Engine management light comes on you dont need a computer for the fault code.

Most of Vauxhall dealers don鈥檛 know about this....

Want to read the Code well first

Take a deep breath get your car keys and get a pen and paper

When you get into the car you know the key has 3 clicks first on for whatever it is second the dash comes on third the starter kicks in

before you put the key into the ignition Make sure that you Press the Break and the Throttle to the Floor ( max

Then turn the key on until The dash board come on and DONT START THE CAR

Wait 2 sec and keep the pedals Down to the floor

the service light under the management light should start flashing

it will flash 4 times leaving 2 second space representing each number

    Zero gets 10 flashes

    for exampleP0110

the light will flash ten times Break (2sec Or 1 not sure) then once, (2sec) once again, then ten

if you have more than one code it will stop for a break then gives the next code

its not a very useful way but helps when you dont want to go to the dealer for a lose socket

this is for Corsa C the Newer models have even better way to tell you the code i think which is on your Mileage Display It will show ECN0 XXXX

which is error code Number forget the zero and the last four digits is what you want

and this works for an astra Too

ive tested this on my own corsa and worked Very well

however if you don鈥檛 have any code stored it will start Flashing and keeps on flashing until you release the paddles.

Codes can be found here at

Can you take a power steering pump pulley off without the pulley puller?

    1973 el camino 350

Changing the timing chain for new one engine has been pressure test compression tested and all good
Can you take a power steering pump pulley off without the pulley puller?
    No.

Special Tool required. Some auto parts stores have a loan-a-tool program. Deposit returned when tool returned.
Can you take a power steering pump pulley off without the pulley puller?
if your changing the timing chain you don't need to pull the power steering pulley off unless it is bad then it is easier to get a new pump to change the timing chain just unbolt the power steering unit from the brackets and sit it a side. put if you want to change the pulley you will need a puller unless your real lucky. if your talking about the harmonic balancer on the crank shaft yes you need a puller.
Its best to have a puller, this will eliminate beating the pulley off and damaging it.It easier to beat it back on than it hammer it off. Most machine shops at your local auto part store will slip it off for a small fee.

And I would do this why?

Instead of buying 10 dollar timing belts, try a high Nitral saturated one.

had you bought a Chevy or a ford $20-$30..

ha ha you bought a Toyota ...ha ha good one
How much does it cost to replace a new timing chains?
Good news is timing chains do not need to be replaced, they just have to be re tightened. This is much cheaper than having a timing belt replaced, but I am not sure how much it would cost for foriegn cars. probably a couple hundred, go to a toyota dealership to do it.
Unless it is make noise you shouldn't have to do anything to it. if I'm not mistaken i believe Toyota uses a hydraulic tensioner which doesn't need any adjustment.

Changed A water pump that is driven off the timing chain? Tell me about it.?

    About it.
Changed A water pump that is driven off the timing chain? Tell me about it.?
Nothing to tell. Just pretend like you're changing the timing belt. Then, when you're half way finished, stop and pretend you're putting on a new water pump. then resume pretending you're putting on a new timing belt.
Changed A water pump that is driven off the timing chain? Tell me about it.?
And remember to check the valve timing. Depending on the type of engine, this could cost you a lot of $$$ if you make a mistake here.
again you need to give more information. what kind of car? what size engine and WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW?

    2000 mitsubishi mirage timing chain?

hello i have a 2000 mitsubishi mirage 1.8 engine. at the shop today for oil change they told me i needed to replace the timing chain??? car runs very good. they said this was a normal scheduled service. cant find a repair book on this car so my question is are they trying to rip me off or is this for really needed??? thank you for your time..
    2000 mitsubishi mirage timing chain?
Your vehicle is equipped with a Timing Belt, not a chain. If you look in your owners manual, it should give you the time/mileage that it is recommended to replace.

Generally anywhere from 70-80,000 miles it is a good time to replace it.
    2000 mitsubishi mirage timing chain?
you mean timing belt right? if it has chain u never change if belt between 80,000 and 100,000 miles...if it breaks your engine is junk
Timming belt. If you are at the reccomended mileage, it's a good idea. If the belt breaks you looking at a monster repair bill.
Timing belt recommended replacement ,60,000 miles on Mitsubishi mirage. don't lapse it can be a very costly mistake.

Ford 460 1988 carbureted in 30' motor home. I'm looking for ways to get low end power?

I already have a Bank's System, high performance ignition, and a Gear Vender, but going up a hill is almost embarrasing. The motor has 40K miles. I have heard that changing the timing chain to a early 70's 460 would add about 100 HP, and 150 lbs. of torque, without changeing the cam. Apparently, to line up the chain, the cam has to be re-aligned for it to fit, and this adds the H.P.It is also supposed to be able to pass smog. Has anyone ever heard of this ? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

first you need to determine what kind of condition the engine is in. as long as the engine is in good shape then you can advance the cam by 8 degrees, which is what the factory retarded the cam by in the 70's to meet emission standards. while that wont add the amount of power you think it will, it will gain a fair amount of low end power. you will need a multi index crank sprocket when you get a good roller chain and gears.

but understand that going up hills in a heavy RV isnt going to be easy even with a modern powerplant. you have to remember that you are motivating upwards of 10,000lbs of weight. also when going up hills you should be in direct drive and not overdrive.

You dont need more horses, you need more torque. Go to a reputable shop and have your engine dyno tested and go from there. THere is no reasons i can think of why that engine can't pull you without embarassment.

Could be a simple thing like fuel mixture, timing, incomplete combustion, obstruction in air intake etc.... Do the simple things first, 90% of the time that is where the problem is.

It may not be the engine, could be the gear ratio.

Good luck. I would be interested at the outcome.
That engine is 20 years old, has it ever been rebuilt? The thing about an engine that is 20 years old with only 40,000 miles is that it has sat many of those years without being cranked. Which means the cylinder walls and rings get dried out during the meantime and get grinded together when you start it up again.

Might be time to freshin up the top end and might as well throw in a set of crank and rod bearings also... Do a compression check and see if it has good even compression across all 8.
port and polish the heads as well as port match your intake buy your self a good set of brass head gaskets and open them up to match your head porting and the intake porting work done, as this will give you more hp as well as torque, which is what you really need for your paticular application, hope this helps ya out
