Timing Chain prblem?
It is a good idea to change it most cars don't get that far with out it snapping.

timing belts are good for anywhere between 35 and 80 thousand miles if it hasn't been changed in this time you risk damaging other components if it breaks how many miles have you put on the car was it purchased used and if it has ever been changed befor need to be addressed befor you make the decision if it does break the valves can contact the pistons and cause major damage bent valves and cracked pistons are very possible
You can run it a little bit more, just be aware that if it does break, you may have more costly repairs.

If the engine is a interference type, then if the belt breaks, the pistons may slam into the valves, causing potential bent valves or other problems. You would have to remove the entire cylinder head to repair that problem, and the cost would be extremely high.

As long as you don't drive too aggressive it should be fine. If it is an actual chain and not a belt, it shouldn't really need to be replaced.
If it's a timing chain, your mechanic noticed too much slack in it which causes a timing error in your engine that may not be corrected by the computer. If it's a timing belt, it has to be changed every 60,000 miles for older cars like yours. See the Gates listing below for your car.

well some trust! see your mechanic is giving you a heads up on something you need to have done.you see if you spin the belt you can bend a valve against the piston which then you have to tear down the head and have that repaired in its self about 700 bucks your looking at and thats cheap. so change your belt dont be cheap he's looking out for your own benifit of not having to deal with a big headache.so get him a case of beer and let him do it.
