My 1987 Dakota had an engine rebuilt, but i noticed that when i accelerate, the timing changes, anyone kno why

When i accelerate, the timing moves away from set timing (7 BTC) and when i floor gas pedal on freeway or uphill the truck just lacks power meaning that it chugs like its going to turn off. And, if unfortunate, it does and when this happens it is hard to start without starting fluid, anyone know why this happens, oh BTW when i bought a new timing set i noticed that the timing chain had play but i didnt know if that was standard or not...

Quick and easy thing to check is that your distributor is tightened down properly at the correct timing. If it is not tightened it can spin throwing the timing off a few degrees...enough to cause what you are describing. If you just had it rebuilt take it back to the shop and have them look at it as it is most likely something they might have missed in the exchange process like a sensor or wire connection. Barring that take it to an ASE certified mechanic for further diagnosis.

it is normal for the timing to advance and retard during various loads.. i'm guessing your valve timing is off a tooth or other factors such as low fuel pressure or restricted exhaust system
the timing chain should not have a lot of slack so you may have got the wrong part. You need to verify timing manually with #1 piston at TDC. Or if all else fails take to a good mechanic.
well if its a 4 cylinder its a timing belt if its a 6 cylinder its a timing chain.......belt stretched out, chain off a tooth
