Timing Chain On 95 Mitsubishi Magna?

I own a 1995 Mitsubishi Magna 4cyl auto, I have the head pulled off the engine to change the head gaskets and generally clean everything up. Only problem is that while we were pulling off the head, someone dropped a small bolt down there, after hours of trying to find it (poking round with a long screwdriver, magnets etc) we couldn't see it or feel it anymore so decided to put the engine back together and see if it would crank slowly by hand to see if the bolt fell through to the sump.

Now here is where im stuck, the timing chain and its top cog won't lift back up high enough to put the bolt with the distributor gearing back in, it's only out by about 5mm so im thinking of 2 things. 1 The bolt is wedged in there somewhere and stopping the chain coming up or 2 The chain has come off its bottom cog and is out of place.

This is about the limit of my %26quot;mechanical skill%26quot; so any ideas would be appreciated, all i can think of is to pull the sump off and see of i can get to the bolt in there and/or put the timing chain back on the bottom cog.

cheers in advance

I'd find a mechanic at a Mitsubishi dealer or independent shop that's done many engine head repairs. Even if you have to pay him to give you some tips, it would be well worth it.
