Does my 2001 mercedes c180 coupe have a timing belt or chains?

I have 2001 mercedes c180 2.0 litre petrol coupe with manual transmission, I just bought the car and would like to find out if I need to change the timing belt! the car has 50000 miles. Im not sure if its belt or chain driven?

it has a timing chain, all mercedes engines have timing chains. there is no interval to replace it on mercedes like there is on cars with timing belts like audi or honda where you have to replace the timing belt every 80k miles.

Chain driven, you don't need to worry about it unless the engine is run without enough oil. The guides are plastic and can be damaged if they don't get enough lubrication.
All Benz engines, gasoline and diesel, use timing chains. Even the little 3-cylinder engine in the Smart uses a timing chain.

There is no recommended maintenance interval for the chain. If you hear the chain is loose (most noticeable during start-up, usually sounds like a slapping sound as the chain hits the engine wall), then you need to change it but that's a rarity. Most engines will never require a new timing chain during their entire service-life.
