I have a 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3, I think it has a timing chain not a belt, am I correct?
It has covered only 38000 miles in 15 years, it runs great but I am thinking I should change the chain.
after 15 years I would change a belt, but is it neccessary to change a chain, just because of age?
Does a timing chain need replacing after 15 years?
The idea of a chain is that you dont need to change it. They have been known to break, but unlike a belt. you cant realy see it coming. Just keep it services. Its low mileage anyway so should be fine.

My old Valiant, a 1976, never needed a timing chain replacement, or any other part in the motor or transmission, and it ran until 2004. None of the cars I owned with timing chains needed them replaced. Chains don't snap like belts do, they eventually stretch. It is far more likely you will hear and feel the need to replace a timing chain in plenty of time (probably weeks) to avoid the damage a snapping timing belt does in moments.
I agree, no need to change it just %26quot;because%26quot;. Timing chains will give notice by rattling like a bag of bolts long, long before they need changing. You'll get fed up with the noise well before any attention is needed.
It would be very unlucky to have to change a chain. They normally have a spring tensioner type plunger that is backed up with oil pressure on start up.The only ones i have done are on high mileage vehicles or the odd one where the slipper has worn away.Stay lucky
No need to change a chain due to age unlike cambelts which do age because of being made using rubber.
The life of a chain is due to mileage, lubrication and engine design. The best thing is to research your vehicle as some engines are more prone to chain wear than others.
Normally with a chain it starts rattling long before it breaks.
NO if you are diy man go for it but it will OK for a long time yet
You change them when they go out. They likely will outlast the the rest of the car .
