the old mazda b series 4 cyl. had no timing marks.you just split the lobes on the cam ,pointing them in the airand roughly even.the crank was set at tdc,what a pain with the timing chain tensioner.if you slacked off the timing chain to much, the tensioner would pop out and into the oil pan.was never ever recomended to push start them as the timing chain tensioner could pop out if the motor slightly turned backwards.

Hi I have a 2001 Ford Sport Trac. I am told to change the timing chain you must change both front and back and it can be a 12+ Hour Job. I am trying to find a motor diagram and find out why it has front and back timing chains?



I am not a newer vehicle mechanic but it seems extremely odd to have both front and rear timing chains? Can someone help me out with a answer. Maybe a link to a motor diagram? Thanks

The rear timing chain (or %26quot;cassette%26quot; as it's called in Ford lingo) is the chain that drives bank #1 (passenger side) cam. The front timing chain drives bank #2 (driver side) cam. There is a also a primary %26quot;jackshaft%26quot; chain that is driven by the crankshaft in order to enable both banks to be driven through a common shaft. The reason for this peculiar layout is because this engine is a %26quot;derivative%26quot; of the 4.0L OHV V6 engine it replaces. Ford simply installed a dummy shaft in place of where the camshaft used to reside on the original OHV engines.



But above all else, the job you describe SHOULD NOT be carried out by anyone unfamiliar with this particular engine. There are NO timing marks on any of the drive sprockets, nor are they key to their corresponding shafts. To time this particular engine requires use of FIVE dedicated Ford/Rotunda tools that hold all relevant parts in proper position. Failing to carry this procedure out correctly, will result in the bending of ALL valves with 100% certainty!!! Therefore, it is best left to a Ford dealer technician to carry out. If that's the 4.0 overhead cam then yes it has a front and back chain one to each head and a chain from crank to the shaft that both those drive from. It's a real winner. There have been service bulletins for updated parts and I'd make sure it gets all the newer parts in hopes it might stay together for a while.

Go to any of the after market camshaft websites, such as Crane or Comp Cams. They have the instructions you need.

One point,,,you do not have a 4.7 unless you have a stroker.

The timing marks on the small gear should be straight up and the large gear, straight down.

Hint..set the original cam marks this way, pull the gears and reinstall. You said that you are only changing the chain. My two cents, you really should change the gears and chain. Not good to run new chain on old gears. The new chain will wear faster.

Drag1in is correct. But he should have added that all engines with the cam inside have the cam gear and the crank gear installed as he told you.

nice car! you dont need to change it yet. but ,as the other guy said, if it noisy you should check it. approx. 120.000 - 130.000 you should change it. bad news: they have to take the whole engine down and you have to pay a lot of labor. the belt costs about $100 but the labor .. $500 (even more) and also they have to replace the water pump.. more bad news : if it brakes you wont have car ever again.. so, good luck!

you will only need to replace it when it gets noisy or when it brakes... the engine will be fine if it brakes it just won't run... I wouldn't worry about it drive it till it brakes then have it replaced
replace it at 100k.



look at the maintenance schedule in your owners manual. and follow it to a tee. OK.

That engine has a timing chain. It does not need replacement as a maintenance item.
Don't worry about it, they last forever. Remember that's a push rod engine and not overhead cams..they came out on the '05
yes its a chain so is not a time to be changed unless it goes noisy.

Your a brave DIY person. Timing chain on a sentra is not much fun. Even the experienced auto technician with a lift (what a messy job). Compression test is next you will want at least 140 psi and not more difference than 14 psi each. If it compresses fuels sparks it should start. You say you identified the plated links and cam shaft sprocket dots did you remove the cam shaft sprockets? Cams? get anything crossed up?

Double check your timing marks. Make sure you are actually looking at the timing marks and not a machining mark on any of the gears. Did you turn the crank or the cam with the chain off? If so, you may have bent one or more exhaust valves.

2003 Nissan truck due 90,000 mile major tune up. My mech says change timing belt, Nissan Mech says no. My mech is very reputable and well known in the northstate. Does work for 3/4 the cost of anyone else and has been doing my vehicles for 15 years. I'm confused... Do I have a new belt/chain put on at the 90, 000 tuneup?

i would recommend it. its kinda a small price maybe 100 150 or so. You could have the opposed engine that when the timing belt/chain breaks the valves clash into the piston and crack them. Thats not a good thing. major cost. Its mostly recommended to change belts about 100,000 miles but 90 would be better.
